I go out of my way to make eye contact with people, because I'm working on a spiritual exercise for myself where I work hard to see people as immortal souls rather than Earth bodies. But it's something that I am doing on purpose.
However, I unconsciously break eye contact when I talk, because I would rather first process thoughts internally before getting feedback from whoever I'm talking with.
Also, I've noticed general cultural differences in eye contact and friendliness in different parts of the USA that I've lived in. In the deep south, in Georgia, where I live now, people will often act friendly but not really look you in the eye. In the Pacific NW, where I used to live, people were less showy about their friendliness, but more readily gave you direct eye contact.
