It is anybody's dream - it really belongs to those who make it come true.
For my part I envision a large part of Indigo Island as an industry... straining plastic out of seawater, compressing it into large blocks, tying those blocks together and building a huge, massive floating foundation for almost any kind of structure on the top pf it. Styrofoam blocks very high - forty feet - with stairsteps cut into it down to the water with boat slips and fishing docks. It would be high enough out of the water for protection from even tidal waves but whatever were added to the top would sink it down some into the ocean. It might even require ballast or an anchor.
MORE DREAM: No money on Indigo Island. Hugs, handshakes, barter and trade. No IOU's on the island. If you can't remember you owe me a little, forget it. Money would be necessary for dealing with the mainland stuff but the na$ty $tuff should be left on the mainland in a bank somewhere and NO CASH on the island. Poisons a society.
As far as RAISING MONEY for the project, I would bet that we have enough writers right here on IS that could apply for GRANTS GRANTS GRANTS from petroleum companies (who have GOT to be embarrased by all their products destroying the oceans) to cruise lines who are adding to the trash..... VERY embarrasing.
Actually a "blanket" grant application could be created by a few of us, posted here on IS, mailed with picture or say, a sample of what is floating around out there to each of the companies and manufacturers who are contributing their trash, unknowingly. Imagine a Coke bottle covered in barnacles accompanying a grant application to Coca-Cola.
BEFORE any of this would happen, Indigo Island would need some mainland connections. I realize this seems scammish but because of confidentiality laws in Nevada - I would recommend a bank and office in Las Vegas or elsewhere in Nevada. FIRST an office (Post Office Box) a Board of Directors (a networked group here on IS), Legal Incorporation and a 501(c)(3) non-profit identity would need to be established. AFTER THAT all funding would come from outside the organization. Thje big bite? Legal fees and even THAT might be donated or volunteered.
Perhaps this could really bring together the Indigo Society. Maybe we'll get some opinion from Daniel Fischer, Prometheus, Zen and others. For that matter Indigo Island could form its ow legal entity. But a dream is a contagious thing and I bet these guys are already thinking.
MEDIA ATTENTION to this would probably be monstrous. As huge as the Gyre itself. On a global basis, this is the other elephant in the living room. NOBODY wants to talk about this. It's too huge. It's too ugly. Definately a compost pile for grant$.
Whoever does something RESPONSIBLE about it is gonna be a hero.
It is anybody's dream.
