I think a good sign of an authentic teacher is that they'll tell you to seek truth within. They teach independence and not another dogma.

I met a supposed Tao master who immediately defined the Tao as some sort of energy, which set off alarms with me. I've studied the Tao te Ching quite a bit, it's beyond such simple definitions. I listened to what he said, but it never quite resonated with me.

I see the divine spark in everyone's eyes, in some it's hard to see, others it's hard to miss. I often use this to judge how close people are to God. This method is far from perfect though, I find people (and myself) move back and forth a lot.
