Experimental, Electronic, Avant Garde, Leftfeild Music Thread

I've seen alot of music sharing threds here on I.S. but I wanted to start one that was a little more specific. I love leftfield, experimental, avant gard, no wave,Post Punk, Noise, Free Jazz, Improvisational, bizarre stuff, experimental videos, moody artistic stuff etc. So I was curious about what is blowing other peoples minds and I would like to share some music that I love. I don't care if it's old or new, silly or serious, but I want to see what sort of out there styles people are listening to.If you've stumbled across something unusual post it here.

Thoughtful criticism, jokes, and praise are welcome.

ENJOY

cool they kinda remind me of nitzer ebb a bit. A little more dancey though. Sounds like they have a marimba type sound going on too.

Here's an experimental video done to Karlheinz Stockhausen's peice called Kontakte:

I've always loved "Kontakte"; it was so WAY ahead of its time.

----

I was trying to find a YouTube video for the original lineup of avant-thrash-jazz-improv group Painkiller (John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Mick Harris) but the sound quality from the clips of that lineup are exceedingly poor and don't give you a good idea of what they're all about. This was the best one I could dig up but it still sounds like crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEhL3KKEhjI&NR=1

The best Painkiller album has to be the 2CD set "Execution Ground", released on Subharmonic Records in 1994. The second CD contains ambient remixes from the performance-based tracks of the first.

I did find a couple of decent sounding clips of a Painkiller performance featuring Ruins drummer Tatsuya Yoshida in place of Harris.

Here's another favorite composer of mine. His name is Harry Partch. He sounds like maybe one of the earliest indigo type personalities I've ever heard of. He started composing at the age of 14 and was openly homosexual in the 1920's,which to me is amazing. He became a hobo and hopped trains through out the depression. Afterwards he went on to be one of the first in the new western world to compose with microtones. He invented a 43 note scale, invented his own instruments and wrote operas to be performed with them. He was influenced by ancient greecian music and theater as well as kabuki, native american tribes and different american dialects. I could not find a good performance of his peices on you tube but I thought I would post some of his documentary that was on the BBC.
Part 1

Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFtOKSl3zZs
Part 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OH0WgLgaAM
I posted the first three because I thought they lay the foundation, so to speak, but if you want to watch the rest by all means go ahead.

Matmos

This is an experimental group called Matmos. They are known for producing a Bjork album and performing live with her. They also have an album they produced only out of sounds recorded from surgical procedures. Here's a few projects by them:
Matmos live w/ Zenna Parkins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TocfDi_OCqU
Exciter lamp and the variable band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmbZtL0YHu8
This one was done by shooting lazers through a cylindrical fish tank filled with snails and when the snail pass through the lazers they trigger a sound and create a improvisational composition.
It's called Snails and Lazers for Patricia Highsmith:

Other Animals

This is an alternate group of Drew Danny of Matmos which is known for doing dancey experimental electronic covers of hardcore punk songs they are called
The Soft Pink Truth

Kitchen by The Soft Pink Truth

A cover of Jon Philips Suza's Stars and Stripes Forever by Matmos

Sorry I posted so much but this group is awsome. They have alot of variety between dancey electronic stuff to experimental stuff. So if you don't like one check out the others. They also have a great sense of humor so don't take anything too seriously. Enjoy

I saw both Ruins and the Boredoms live in relatively small venues, albeit on separate occasions.
The Ruins gig was in support of the "Graviyanosch" CD, probably the first tour with bassist Ryuichi Masuda. Up until that point, I'd never really seen what Yoshida looked like--the only picture I'd seen was the little blurry photo inside the "Stonehenge" CD. He reminded me of a mild-mannered Japanese school-teacher up until the moment he got behind his drum kit.
Being a drummer myself, I was mesmerized the whole time, watching his mastery. Masuda also had some interesting tricks, like holding a toy noise-generator up to his bass pickups and running the resulting sound through his effects pedals.

The Boredoms show I saw was just before "Pop Tatari" was released. Before seeing them, I wasn't sure how much of their music was structured and how much of it was merely random accident. That night, I learned absolutely nothing was by accident. They opened the show with a flawless rendition of "Bubblepop Shot" from "Soul Discharge"; not only did they perform the song almost exactly as recorded, it made the studio version pale in comparison because the sound at the live show was so much more intense. To perform such unconventionally structured songs as tightly as they did was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Everyone talks about Eye's vocals, but I think I was more impressed with Yoshimi--the amount of vocal power and range coming from such a small woman was astounding!

I've also seen Seiichi Yamamoto's side project, Omoide Hatoba; they played at the same venue that I saw Ruins at. Admittedly, it was a lot more "representational" than the Boredoms, but still wonderfully noisy and chaotic. By then, I knew that nothing they did was a lucky accident.

If there's one Japanese band that I regret NOT seeing live, it's KK Null's Zeni Geva. I discovered Zeni Geva through a little insert/catalogue that was included inside the CD liner of my copy of Graviyanosch.

----

I actually heard about John Zorn because of his connections with the grindcore scene. At the time, I was heavy into a lot of "Earache" bands (Napalm Death, Carcass, Godflesh) when someone passed me a dubbed cassette copy of Naked City's eponymous album.
Now, you can tell I'm a bit of geezer, not just because I mention cassette tapes, but also because back then, there were no MP3's, YouTube or even the Web. Phone modems and BBS's were still state-of-the-art novelties that working class stiffs like me couldn't afford.
Anyways, once me and friends heard that Naked City cassette, we ended up scouring our limited universe for all things John Zorn. To this day, "Spy vs. Spy" is still my all-time favourite record. My dream used to be to play in a band that did that kind of material: free jazz at hardcore speed and intensity, for the sole reason that it would be the BEST FUN ever.
Unfortunately, I've never been able to hook up musicians who had both the interest AND the ability.

No Doubt, There is a lot of good stuff coming out there always has been but it never gets enough attention usually it gets attention via what ever comes next then someones says hey this band from awhile ago did that samething but different and better. It's so rare when pop culture is up to date with the possibilities and varieties of music there actually is going on. Now that the music industry is crumbling it's a free for all for creative people. So there is just so much more out there that gets no acknowledgement. Your average teen listens to the same music as there parents yet there's so much more interesting stuff happening and that has happened that there are so many options to hear somthing different. Anyway that my rant and I like all those bands on your thread, but don't forget to share with this thread. I saw Klaxxons open for Bjork at MSG. Unfortunately the sound guy sucked and I could hear alot of it but I like the other stuff I've heard. There sure didn't mess up Bjorks sound, though.

Reluctant?

I saw the Boredoms perform on 7/7/07 underneith the Brooklyn Bridge (I was actually up on the bridge looking down) and they had 77 full drum kits with drummers from too many different "good" bands to remember .eg. lightning bolt, sonic youth, i don't know some others too. The had them assembled in a spiral playing a composition that was synchopated with the sun. I know your not that spiritual but it was pretty deep to me. I mean there was literally a line that went across a whole neighborhood and into another there was roughly 2000 people I heard 1600 R.S.V.P. online. Needless to say not everyone could fit into the park so I went up on the bridge and it was shoulder to shoulder up there. It was so loud I could hear it over the traffic buzzing by undernieth where I was standing. So I can see this spiral of drums surrounded by an endless crowd of on lookers. It was nuts. The craziest part was it sounded good, people were dancing. I thought it would be a cacophony but it was structured rhythmic madness at an extremely loud but comfortable volume. You might have heard of it already but it was called Boadrum Here's some youtube videos of it:
I'll put the funny one first:

Hi {{d*@*b}},

Sorry for not replying or posting for a while but in some ways, it reflects the fact that we're probably in different stages in our lives.
In some ways, I'm slightly envious that you can still attend events like that BoreDrums performance and the fact that you're in a cultural focal point like the NYC area. It also kind of makes me a little nostalgic for my younger days when I used to do similar kinds of things. At the same time, I can't say that I'm unhappy with where I am in my life. On one hand, doing the kids/work thing is pretty mundane and tedious but it has rewards, as well. (I was feeling a little down last week and my eldest daughter picked up on it; she did her best to try and cheer me and just the fact that she tried actually worked. )

----

Just to reference a little bit back to John Zorn: he cited Anthony Braxton as one of his biggest influences. Did you ever get into Braxton's work? I have to admit, on an intellectual level, it's over my head--I'm still not sure how his compositions are actually put together--but maybe that's part of the appeal for me. Because I don't understand it on a "technical" level, I can only respond to Braxton's music on a strictly visceral level. Amazing stuff and I highly recommend it if you haven't heard it before.
BTW, if you ARE new to Braxton, then I also recommend that you start from his early works and move forward from there--maybe it's just me, but I see a definite progression from past to present. I think if you were to jump into his recent stuff right away, he might lose you.

yeah bill laswell and john zorn are amazing musicians. i gotta be in the right frame of mind tho otherwise its just too noisy! or something...well especially zorn.
maybe a little more mellow and mainstream ever listen to kronos quartet? i enjoy what they do, it's got classical, electric guitars, cellos, jazz, and experiemental (?) sound all fused.it's very elegant and mellow tho, defintely classical music sound.

i've been recently getting nostalgic for some of the music i used to like back when. listening to legendary pink dots(and the many side projects of those musicians) , aphex twin, this mortal coil, quite a bit more mellow than the other stuff here and the future sound of london a lot lately.

I also like the mellower stuff but I also love the noisy stuff to. That is also the type of stuff I set up this thread for. Aphex Twin is one of my favorites. FSOL is great to. I have heard some of the Kronos quartet and Legendary Pink Dots. Please share

Yeah don't be to envious. I am 28 and grew up about 15 minutes outside New York and I have to say the magical chaos it used to be pre Guliani is not what it is anymore. Many of the great venues have come and gone the city is set up for the wealthy and it is not as welcomeing to the fringes as it used to be, but I live in Red Hook Broooklyn which is like the final frontier of the "Old" New York City but even still this neighborhood is slowly being taken over by yuppies and the prices for rent are skyrocketing at an insane rate. John Zorn recently opened up a venue called the Stone after the venue he helped start (Tonic) got shut down. Anyway, I am pretty domestic myself and I rarley go to shows anymore because they're usualy geared towards the decadent trust fund kids. Alot of genuine music and art just doesn't get much attention. There is one great venue called the Yard and Project issue room by me that is housed in an old grain silo on the Gowanus canal. They have alot of experimental stuff there but alot of people don't go unless there is free wine or cheap beer. (the misconception is that the neighborhood is dangerous because it is dark and industrial, new yorkers are much more timid these days) If I were living a less mundane life I probably wouldn't be typng away on my computer on a saturday night.

Anyway, yeah I know of Anthony Braxton because his son,Tyondai, has been doing alot of music over the past couple years. He is in an incredible band called Battles right now that also includes the drummer from Helmet and Tomahawk, the guitarist was in Don Caballero and the bassist was in the band Lynx. (I am horrible at remembering names) There kind of a super group critics call them math rock but they aren't quite that. Tyondai also put out some solo stuff as well. I have yet to go to one of his solo shows, but I heard he sit in the middle of a circle of guitar pedals and anolouge effect boxes with a mic and a guitar and just goes nuts.

Well I am glad to have people responding but even if what you like isn't exactly like what has been posted thus far but you think it is pretty "out there" . Post it. peace
