  • Do you believe someone can be born without a soul?

It's just a question I've been pondering for awhile.

I've met several people who I truly believe lack any semblance of a soul, they have no compassion, no understanding of love, they thrive on others pain and misery and often help cause it.

Human shaped monsters if you will.

How do you feel about this? Have you met anyone that fits the description?

They closest I've been able to come to naming this group of people is to bunch them in with Psychic Vampires. However, I do know that many Psychic vampires are not malevolent or evil.

I put this in the relationship section because I wonder if you've ever had contact with these people and how it went.

    John Steinbeck said it best:
"I believe there are monsters born in the world to human parents... The face and body may be perfect, but if a twisted gene or a malformed egg can produce physical monsters, may not the same process produce a malformed soul?"

    Discuss.

I really don't know. I heard about a year ago that some beleived that some humans were born or created that had no souls...literally. It was not that they were hiding their souls or souls so wounded that they were acting out of pain either. I wish I could remeber the name or word that was attributed to this but I can't, sorry. It was my understanding that these humans were created to exist almost like drones... but "drones" was not the word.

In regards to psy vamps... maybe some but not all. I know some psy vamps are just the walking wounded and others take great joy and pleasure at feeding off of others... maybe the latter could be without a soul but if they had no soul, then would they have emotion even if it was joy at the expense of others?

Vamp reporting in. I do indeed have a soul, two in fact, but that's a different story altogether.

I suppose it's possible to not have a soul, but I don't really think that would cause the behavior you described. I think heartless would be more appropriate. And I have met people like that before.

This may not be what you wanted, and I don't think it's the only pathology for such traits, but it sounds like Attachment Disorder. In Attachment Disorder, the individual is so shut down by trauma and particularly extreme abandonment, that they enjoy the suffering of others as it somehow validates their pain and makes them feel alive if that makes sense. Essentially, it's what causes psychopathic personality when the trauma is extreme enough or affective attunement absent enough.

In 19th century orphanages where babies were never handled or cared for or responded to, frequently their immune system would just stop functioning and they would die. It's ironic but some of the orphanages with the highest sanitation requirements for handling the babies.. had the highest mortality rates.. 90% in some cases. The ones that lived frequently never learned to love and had attachment disorder before it was clinically identified as such. Just look at the Romanian orphan crisis, as that spawned similar characterisitics to varying degrees. Often these individuals will appear precocious but there is no depth or real warmth behind it. The precociousness is kind of like a last ditch effort to get someone to love them before they shut down totally.

The fact that they enjoy causing pain to me says that they have a soul, as they are looking to something they can relate to.. some power that says they matter and are important. To be so shut down emotionally is often devastating on a certain front. There were many years of my life when I couldn't cry, and it was nothing about their pain, but when I saw someone cry I would feel so relieved and happy to be in touch with that emotion.. even if it wasn't mine. I'm sure the inability to feel their pain and misery causes them to create the pain for others. It takes a twisted warped identity to do that, but it is an identity. If not in just this life, their souls might be imprinted by very negative trauma. I can't say for sure.

Oh! I almost forgot about gingers!

They're truly evil creatures with no souls at all.

Next time you see someone with red hair, pale skin, and freckles run away before they catch you.

I jest of course, they're not all evil.

That was actually pretty interesting to read. Not sure I agree with it all but interesting nonetheless.

I don't think there is such thing as humans with no soul. I do believe that some humans have corrupted souls so they act in a very inhumane manner. Monster-like, if you will. Yes, no compassion, almost devoid of any kind of emotion, they feed of negative energy, they like seeing other people sad, angry, hurt ...

They seem to get a kick of it. But I wouldn't say they don't have souls. Without souls they wouldn't be able to function that well in our society. But metaphorically speaking, yes, some people can be termed as "having no souls". Mass murderers and serial killers for example. People who love to torture other people physically and psychologically. Oh yeah, or those who we call the elite. Yeah, them ... They seem to have no souls or grasp of spirituality and what it is.

Not only that we are not alone ... We have never been alone ...

Assuming that souls exist, I believe them to be simply a form a spiritual energy that has managed to form consciousness, and something necessary for conscious beings, if not all living things.

"Not I," she said, "I'll lie here with you"

Could they be considered living then?
