Today it hit me hard about how my babies just seem to have it all in place. Well…most of it in place. They just seem to have a knowing and a nonjudgmental perspective of life.
I had this conversation with a 5 year old today while we were working one on one. This is a little Hopi boy who lives with his nally (grandmother). He’s one of the happiest boys that I know. He steals food to bring home to his nally.
He was putting letters in order when he blurted out,
“You know that my dads in jail.”
I said, “Oh? Why is he in jail?”
“Oh, he just wasn’t nice to the mom.”
I said, “Your mom?”
“No. I don’t have a mom. He was mean to the other mom. He has to stay in jail until he learns to be nice but he’s going to go back.”
I said, “How do you know that he’s going back?”
He got this big smile on his face and said, “You know how I know. It’s the same way that you know that I’m going to steal his (points to another boy in my class) grapes at lunch today. But he doesn’t need them. He’s got some at home. But my dads gonna go back to jail. It’s ok…he won’t learn to be nice this time but he’ll learn next time.”
I said, “Maybe because you are such a nice boy he will learn to be nice from you.”
He said, “No. But it will help him next time.”
I said, “Well look how much you will help him. Even if he doesn’t learn this time you are helping him to be a better person next time.”
“How about I trade you “boys” grapes for 4 yummy oranges from the fridge? Does your Nally like oranges?”
He said, “Yup! It’s a deal!”

He just knew that his dad was where he needs to be. No judgment. No blame. Just pure understanding. This kid’s life is upside down but he is truly happy.
This came after a friend had a blow up with someone and spoke only of revenge. Kinda puts things in perspective.
I love my job!
