The rainbow fish
“The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for."
I just read "The boy who ate Stars"..it's a great book about a little boy who has Autism
Sometimes life kicks you in the nuts, best thing I learnt so far is to scream BLOODY HELL as loud as I can, readjust the jock strap, and walk on.
But tomorrow may rain,so I'll follow the sun
The Kissing Hand...about saying good-bye

My girls were also fascinated by a shortened picture book version of the Wizard of Oz.
Also the ADL has an extensive bibliography of children's books that teach tolerance of almost every kind of person of difference. http://www.adl.org/bibliography/
OH!! My most favorite of all topics!
After years of teaching 1st and 2nd grade, and my daughter is now 9, I have TONS and TONS of favorite books!
My latest is Ish- cant remember the Author. It is about a little boy ho loved to draw. Until he brother made fun of him- his drawings were not "perfect". He finally gave up drawing after crumpling up his drawings. He followed his sister after she grabbed the crumpled drawing. She had hung all of his drawing and bragged how she loved them. they were "ish"-- vase-ish, boat-ish---- so he began drawing ishly- and thinking ishly- and writing ish poems.
It is wonderful!
Another is On the Day you Worn Born- it is about how all of the animals of the world spread the world a new life was here. It shows all types of endangered animal on land, sea and air. It ends when they tell the moon and the sun
I'll find some more

Nightlights volumes 1 & 2
It has small stories for children with affirmations at the end and it also has lessons on how to teach children visualisation as a meditation and with the affirmations at the end of each story it suggests you ask children open ended questions.
Dont ask the children "is love good" ask the children "what does love mean to you".
Beauty and the Beast by Marianna Mayer
Even though we all know the story, it's definitely worth picking up. The illustrations are breathtaking.
"The Boy With the Square Eyes" (about a boy who watches too much television and how it warps his perspecitive of everything around him)
"The Very Hungry Catepillar" (timeless)
"Goodnight Moon" ()
"What's the Big Idea?" (gorgeous pictures - and really snappy rhymes, my girls loved it!)
"I'll Love You Forever" (beware, this one about a little boy growing up and his mother's love and how her love is returned always makes me cry!)
"The Velveteen Rabbit" (2 year olds may not be ready for this one yet, but you might - I love it)
"Death is a stripping away of all that is not you. The secret of life is to "die before you die" — and find that there is no death."
"We're Going On A Bear Hunt" (the pop-up version is beautiful...)...my 5yo son had this read to him at kinder last year and I bought the book unknowingly and when we first read it he started reading along with me and doing the actions his teacher had taught him!
