Hi Potato-Man
Here is an excerpt about meditation from the following website:
http://beyondmeditation.com/content/view/1/60/
With meditation, you are shutting down the conscious part of your brain while staying aware. This allows for data to flow from your subconscious mind, and many things become possible.
The simplest of all meditation techniques is to focus on your breathing. This is done by counting to a number during the in breath, and then counting to that number again during the out breath.
The counting should be done slowly, and to a number you're comfortable with. The goal in this type of meditation isn't to get to high numbers while breathing, just to be aware of your breathing.
For this meditation technique you should be focusing on making your physical body relax, using PMR (progressive muscular relaxation. This means that you start by relaxing your toes on the first breath, your feet and ankles for the next few breaths, moving up the body till you are totally relaxed. At this point, your body will begin to feel numb and you will feel very heavy. If you're familiar with meditation techniques, this is the onset of a trance state.
I often get asked why anyone would want to experience meditation. People have different reasons, and I can only tell you my own. I learned how to meditate to quiet my mind and to stop thinking . Have you ever had a problem you just couldn't stop thinking about?
I used to stay up all night worrying about this and that, keeping myself awake because of my racing thoughts. Meditation to keep your thoughts in check is very important if you want to feel good about yourself. If you keep thinking about your problems and worrying about what to do, you're only making things worse.
Now I'm not saying you should avoid your problems. That would be silly. However, thinking constantly about anything is NOT healthy. The mind needs time to relax in order to process new thoughts and ideas, and meditation can help you achieve this. When you're stressed out, getting a good night's sleep depends on being able to shut down your mind. An overactive mind will not get the rest it needs.

Basically, Potatoman, you can count to 10, 1 on the in-breath and 1 on the out-breath, and repeat, or not even bother about counting, but just focus your awareness on the breath moving in and out of your nostrils. Besides counting or focusing on the breath, you can simply try emptying your mind. I do this after something upsets me. I take a deep breathe and stare into space, then I "chill out". I just think of nothing, until I feel happier about my situation, and can map out the concrete actions/steps I can take to remedy an un-pleasant situation or a challenge.
There are many types of meditation techniques all with the purpose of relaxing the body and allowing one's Higher Self to connect with the higher thoughts, which might not get much of a "say" (be heard) during our busy waking hours (when reactive thoughts are seething through our minds).
There's lots of info about meditation on the Internet, classes to learn meditation, and instructional CDs and other media.
See the following web page please for a description of some different ways on how to meditate:

I like doing "mindfulness" or "awareness" meditation, say on public transport, where I focus on a corner of the window or a sound, like the train moving, and zero in on only that and ignore everything else. I also like doing the mantra meditation whereby I chant Om Mani Padme Hume, a Tibetan blessing which invokes or connects to the Higher Self. Here is a link to some mantras.

I confess that I sometimes say the complete "Hail Mary" prayer as a meditation mantra also, but it's only meditation mantra if you relax your physical body while saying it out loud or in your mind. It won't help you connect to your inner source or higher inspiration if you are tense and nervous bodily.![]()
