    Funny Superstitions

I don't know about you all, but my grandmother had some doozies as far as superstitions. One I remember really haunted me till I married; If someone sweeps or vacuums under your feet, you will never get married! I wonder if this is why I felt I had to marry so early??? *ponders that thought*

I really believed this growing up and every time someone swept near me I ran or got up and walked away.

Anyone have funny fibs they fell for?

If a black cat crosses your path you will have bad luck, unless you go the other way or cross your fingers in front of you.

This ad goes away when you register.

I fell for it when I was a kid and it did not help we had two black cats. My Mom did that to screw with me when I was about 4-5. I probably looked like I had a problem when I constantly ran away squealing from our two cats. The neighbors more than likely thought so, they were such nosy busy bodies.

If you spill salt, throw it over your shoulder for good luck...

It's bad luck to enter into one door and leave through a different one... That one always blew my mind... how do they get out of a grocery store? LOL

I was told is was bad luck to walk under a ladder. Also, bad luck if a black cat crosses your path. If I keep making that face it will freeze that way. Frogs will cause warts. If I eat my bread crust, it will grow hair on my chest (ewww i'm a girl). Those few more, I thought of...I know there are more..*thinking*.

Yep, I've heard all of those, too. After I made the poll I realized there are dozens!

The cat taking the baby's breath and killing them I never really fell for. I thought my grandmother was paranoid and secretly hated cats.

Funny, Dabbs @ the door..good point, never thought of that! I can see people going out the back and getting stopped.. "Sorry, I have to go out the back". They would think you were nuts.

The if you step on a crack, you'll break your mom's back... I never knew IF I did actually break her back, since I was adopted. I did try not to step on the cracks just in case.

As to the cemetery... We were always told that if you drive by a cemetery, you have to raise your feet... so the ghosts can't get you!

    lol!

Crap, how could I have forgot that one. I cleared that belief using theta because I always searched for wood to knock on. I cleared that and "never say never". They consumed my life regularly prior to.

There is an Old English witches spell, which breaks the 7yrs bad luck of breaking a mirror.

What you do is you go to the nearest river and throw the remaining parts of it over your left shoulder into the river, and it washes the bad luck away.

And, leaving the house through a different door than you entered, isn't bad luck... it is considered a sign of an early death if you do this accidentally, as traditionally the deceased are removed from the house through the back door, and never the front.

Another belief is that if the foot of your bed points towards the door of the room, that you will also die young.

There are other beliefs that you must not sleep in front of a mirror as it will cause you to become a psi-vampire (but not sure about that).

I used to have a terrible stammer as a child, and my dad used to relentlessly tickle me whenever I walked past - to the point mum had to tell him off, as it disturbed a lot of things we were trying to do... like watch TV, have dinner, go to the toilet etc.

I was told when I was younger that if you walked or drove past a cemetery you weren't suppose to breathe by any of the places where there were bodies buried. If you did, you were breathing in death and it would harm you (not sure how it would harm you, but it would be bad).

I've heard that too... I just wave as I go by them... I'm fine with walking under ladders as long as I walk back under the same one... Reverses any bad luck, in my opinion...

Edit: Almost forgot! The only superstition I actually take seriously is speaking of the "Scottish play" in theaters... The way to remove it, I've heard, is to run outside, spin 3 times, spit, and then knock on the door and wait to be let in...

hm. I've heard quite a few growing up.

    * Hold your breath while passing a cemetary until you reach the first white house after it. Otherwise you'll be haunted.
    * It was bad luck to not wear green on St. Patrick's (reinforced by the fact that if you forgot than you'd be punched in the arm)
    * A crow's caw signals something bad will happen.
    * An itchy left hand mean you'll get money.
    * An itchy nose means you'll either kiss a fool or get in a fight. (In my case it always seemed to be both.)
    * Taking the tag from a past flight off your travel bag is bad luck.
    * Knocking on wood prevents mishaps.
    * If your clasp on a chain is in the front it means someone is thinking of you.
    * A stray lash grants you a wish.
    * A sudden scent of floral (that's misplaced) means a passed loved one is near.
    * Lavender brings luck.
    * Line door frames and windows with salt to keep out negative entities.
    * Sneezing at exactly 3pm means you'll have an unexpected surprise. (not sure where my mom got this one from...)
    * 11:11 means the angels want you to make a wish. Prayers are more powerful when said at this time
    * 5:55 means a change will occur.
    * A twitching muscle (especially the eye) fortells of an unfortunate event to someone you know.
