I think the conventional reality and routines most people are caught in are a dream. Materialism, superficial relations with people, persuits of wealth, working mindlessly at a job for 9 hours a day to pay for a nice car, and such.

Two types of dreams normal dreams and lucid dreams....
If we say we are in a dream and acknowledge the fact, then technically we are lucid dreaming because we know we are in a dream
If you deny that we are in a dream then you are noramlly dreaming becuase you dont know you are dreams....its possible one of the great questions philosophers ask...
You should read about some of the Hindu beliefs on this. Namely the idea of our lower earthly reality being a quasi-illusion (Maya), still theoretically "real" but like a skewed version of the big Reality, like we're seeing things through a fog or a veil. There's also the view of God as the Universal Dreamer, who is dreaming up all of us and the reality that we know is a figment of His creative imagination. Also, that the big Illusion is the concept that we're all separate from each other and from the Divine when we're really all one.
I think if you're interested in these concepts it's worth checking out. Some reading material on the Advaita-Vedanta school of philosophy would probably be a good starting point, as would some of the religious scriptures. Good luck!
