Mexico swine flu deaths spur global epidemic fears - Yahoo! News

By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer Mark Stevenson, Associated Press Writer – 32 mins ago

MEXICO CITY – A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.

The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.

"We are very, very concerned," World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. "We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human ... It's all hands on deck at the moment."

The outbreak caused alarm in Mexico, where more than 1,000 people have been sickened. Residents of the capital donned surgical masks and authorities ordered the most sweeping shutdown of public gathering places in a quarter century. President Felipe Calderon met with his Cabinet Friday to coordinate Mexico's response.

The WHO was convening an expert panel to consider whether to raise the pandemic alert level or issue travel advisories.

It might already be too late to contain the outbreak, a prominent U.S. pandemic flu expert said late Friday.

Given how quickly flu can spread around the globe, if these are the first signs of a pandemic, then there are probably cases incubating around the world already, said Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota.

In Mexico City, "literally hundreds and thousands of travelers come in and out every day," Osterholm said. "You'd have to believe there's been more unrecognized transmission that's occurred."

There is no vaccine that specifically protects against swine flu, and it was unclear how much protection current human flu vaccines might offer. A "seed stock" genetically matched to the new swine flu virus has been created by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, said Dr. Richard Besser, the agency's acting director. If the government decides vaccine production is necessary, manufacturers would need that stock to get started.

Authorities in Mexico urged people to avoid hospitals unless they had a medical emergency, since hospitals are centers of infection. They also said Mexicans should refrain from customary greetings such as shaking hands or kissing cheeks. At Mexico City's international airport, passengers were questioned to try to prevent anyone with flu symptoms from boarding airplanes and spreading the disease.

Epidemiologists are particularly concerned because the only fatalities so far were in young people and adults.

The eight U.S. victims recovered from symptoms that were like those of the regular flu, mostly fever, cough and sore throat, though some also experienced vomiting and diarrhea.

U.S. health officials announced an outbreak notice to travelers, urging caution and frequent handwashing, but stopping short of telling Americans to avoid Mexico.

Mexico's Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordoba said 68 people have died of flu and the new swine flu strain had been confirmed in 20 of those deaths. At least 1,004 people nationwide were sick from the suspected flu, he said.

The geographical spread of the outbreaks also concerned the WHO — while 13 of the 20 deaths were in Mexico City, the rest were spread across Mexico — four in central San Luis Potosi, two up near the U.S. border in Baja California, and one in southern Oaxaca state.

Scientists have long been concerned that a new flu virus could launch a worldwide pandemic of a killer disease. A new virus could evolve when different flu viruses infect a pig, a person or a bird, mingling their genetic material. The resulting hybrid could spread quickly because people would have no natural defenses against it.

Still, flu experts were concerned but not alarmed about the latest outbreak.

"We've seen swine influenza in humans over the past several years, and in most cases, it's come from direct pig contact. This seems to be different," said Dr. Arnold Monto, a flu expert with the University of Michigan.

"I think we need to be careful and not apprehensive, but certainly paying attention to new developments as they proceed."

The CDC says two flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, seem effective against the new strain. Roche, the maker of Tamiflu, said the company is prepared to immediately deploy a stockpile of the drug if requested.

Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.

Cordoba said Mexico has enough Tamiflu to treat 1 million people, but the medicine will be strictly controlled and handed out only by doctors.

Mexico's government had maintained until late Thursday that there was nothing unusual about the flu cases, although this year's flu season had been worse and longer than past years.

The sudden turnaround by public health officials angered many Mexicans.

"They could have stopped it in time," said Araceli Cruz, 24, a university student who emerged from the subway wearing a surgical mask. "Now they've let it spread to other people."

The city was handing out free surgical masks to passengers on buses and the subway system, which carries 5 million people each day. Government workers were ordered to wear the masks, and authorities urged residents to stay home from work if they felt ill.

Closing schools across Mexico's capital of 20 million kept 6.1 million students home, as well as thousands of university students. All state and city-run cultural activities were suspended, including libraries, state-run theaters, and at least 14 museums. Private athletic clubs closed down and soccer leagues were considering canceling weekend games.

The closures were the first citywide shutdown of public gathering places since thousands died in the devastating 1985 earthquake.

Mexico's response brought to mind other major outbreaks, such as when SARS hit Asia. At its peak in 2003, Beijing shuttered schools, cinemas and restaurants, and thousands of people were quarantined at home.

In March 2008, Hong Kong ordered more than a half-million students to stay home for two weeks because of a flu outbreak. It was the first such closure in Hong Kong since the outbreak of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome.

"It's great they are taking precautions," said Lillian Molina, a teacher at the Montessori's World preschool in Mexico City, who scrubbed down empty classrooms with Clorox, soap and Lysol between fielding calls from worried parents.

U.S. health officials said the outbreak is not yet a reason for alarm in the United States. The five people sickened in California and three in Texas have all recovered.

It's unclear how the eight, who became ill between late March and mid-April, contracted the virus because none were in contact with pigs, which is how people usually catch swine flu. And only a few were in contact with each other.

CDC officials described the virus as having a unique combination of gene segments not seen before in people or pigs. The bug contains human virus, avian virus from North America and pig viruses from North America, Europe and Asia. It may be completely new, or it may have been around for a while and was only detected now through improved testing and surveillance, CDC officials said.

The most notorious flu pandemic is thought to have killed at least 40 million people worldwide in 1918-19. Two other, less deadly flu pandemics struck in 1957 and 1968.
This isn't as dire as the media makes it out to be - it's essentially just a new strain of the flu virus. However what I wanted to point out is what is in bold. The fact that this virus is created when multiple strains of the influenza virus attack a person, pig or bird.

Essentially the flu vaccination is an injection of MANY different strands of the influenza virus (I am not sure if they are weakened or dead). This allows your immune system to attack it, win and remember those strains so the body doesn't get sick from them again. Could it be though that mixing all of those strains together and injecting them into a living being is causing new super strains of the flu virus?

Does anyone know if they administer anything like this to swine or foul? While it might protect the crop - what about other living organisms that come into contact with the crop animals? Perhaps they would pick up the new super virus?

MEXICO CITY – A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.

The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.

What researchers Certainly whoever created this thing has seen it.

"We are very, very concerned," World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. "We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human ... It's all hands on deck at the moment."

Novel= Genetically created and hosted. Nature doesn't make 'novel ' organisms.

Well sure that sounds sensible. Prevent people from gathering and talking about the disease even while they are not spreading it.

The WHO was convening an expert panel to consider whether to raise the pandemic alert level or issue travel advisories.

Roger Daltery and Pete Townsend will ultimately decide to impose travel restrictions and urge all travelers to destroy their hotel rooms. (okay I jest)

It might already be too late to contain the outbreak, a prominent U.S. pandemic flu expert said late Friday.

Might? If people are sick that thing is incubating in hundreds more people.

Given how quickly flu can spread around the globe, if these are the first signs of a pandemic, then there are probably cases incubating around the world already, said Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota.

Then might might be too much of an understatement. IT IS INCUBATING AND SPREADING RIGHT NOW and EVERYONE NEEDS to take precautionary measures.

REally? Has been created? When? Recently? A year ago? They just 'happen' to have seed stock on hand...how convenient. Where did they get it? From the people who created it? And if this has not been seen before how come the CDC has the 'seed' stock for it.

Authorities in Mexico urged people to avoid hospitals unless they had a medical emergency, since hospitals are centers of infection.

I'd advise Americans to stay away from hospitals too.

They also said Mexicans should refrain from customary greetings such as shaking hands or kissing cheeks. At Mexico City's international airport, passengers were questioned to try to prevent anyone with flu symptoms from boarding airplanes and spreading the disease.

That will help since a virus needs a two -four day incubation time before symptoms start. I could get on a plane in the flush of health and be puking my guts out two hours later.

Epidemiologists are particularly concerned because the only fatalities so far were in young people and adults.

Kill anyone that is healthy and young enough to protest or fight government poisoning and oppression. Good idea. Now we are only left with the problem of making sure our militia has senior discount cards....

WHY? Because to say 'hey you might want to avoid Mexico for a few weeks so you don't get sick 'will cause a panic? Just fucking avoid Mexico. There I said it. How many of you are panickng? No one? See?

Mexico's Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordoba said 68 people have died of flu and the new swine flu strain had been confirmed in 20 of those deaths. At least 1,004 people nationwide were sick from the suspected flu, he said.

The geographical spread of the outbreaks also concerned the WHO — while 13 of the 20 deaths were in Mexico City, the rest were spread across Mexico — four in central San Luis Potosi, two up near the U.S. border in Baja California, and one in southern Oaxaca state.

A new virus could evolve when different flu viruses infect a pig, a person or a bird, mingling their genetic material. The resulting hybrid could spread quickly because people would have no natural defenses against it.

BULLSHIT, nothing in nature is mad scientisting that sort of blend that has human fuckery written all over it. When the hell have we ever heard of a pig on a farm getting swine flu, or bird flu . Science deliberately uses pig dna and material to blend viruses because it so closely matches human dna. Thats why so much insulin was made from pigs

Still, flu experts were concerned but not alarmed about the latest outbreak.

"They won't be alarmed until their dumb asses contract it then I bet they will be plenty alarmed."

That's nice way to get people to rush and get their killer immunizations. Presuming someone could afford them.

Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.

Cordoba said Mexico has enough Tamiflu to treat 1 million people, but the medicine will be strictly controlled and handed out only by doctors.

????????????????????????? erm...who else would it be prescribed by? Santa Claus?

Mexico's government had maintained until late Thursday that there was nothing unusual about the flu cases, although this year's flu season had been worse and longer than past years.

Nothing unusual about a thousand people coming down with some strangely concoted exotic flu that has 'never been seen before'?

The sudden turnaround by public health officials angered many Mexicans.

    Good.

"They could have stopped it in time," said Araceli Cruz, 24, a university student who emerged from the subway wearing a surgical mask. "Now they've let it spread to other people."

Be alarmed, don't be alarmed, be alarmed don't be alarmed. Use caution, don't use caution. Go to mexico, don't go to Mexico.

It's unclear how the eight, who became ill between late March and mid-April, contracted the virus because none were in contact with pigs, which is how people usually catch swine flu. And only a few were in contact with each other.

Because we aren't catching the fucking shit from PIGS????HUH??? Maybe that's why? Remember there is nothing unusual about this disease.

homeopathy and epidemics: good news--don't panic

i never get much response when i talk about homeopathy here. i realize that most americans have been kept ignorant by the powers that be. it is a type of remedy/system of application that was widely practiced since the early 1800's in direct competition with the ancestor of our current conventional medicine. the AMA managed to make it illegal here but it has continued to flourish around the world. it is very inexpensive, well-tested, and safe- no side effects.

now may be the time to inform yourself. read the info below. homeopathy performed well in the 1918 flu epidemic: 1-2% mortality as compared with 30% by conventional medicine. note that homeopaths reported that people who had already taken the aspirin that was recommended at the time (it was the new wonder drug), had a much harder time.

    Learning from history:

The Use of Homeopathic medicines in the 1918 Influenza Epidemic

There has been much discussion about the merits or otherwise of Avian Flu anti-viral medicines in the media, but no discussion of the effectiveness of homeopathy in the treatment of influenza. History shows us that homeopathy was used by homeopathic physicians in the USA to treat patients during the 1918-1919 influenza epidemic. From information recorded by these doctors, homeopathic treatment was highly successful. In most cases one or two homeopathic medicines were needed. These are known as the "genus epidemicus" in an epidemic and become known through the careful observation of a number of influenza cases. It is difficult to speculate exactly what homeopathic remedies will work best in a possible Avian flu epidemic. However there are a number of known 'flu remedies that may be useful e.g. Gelsemium, Bryonia, Arnica, Eupatorium perforatum, Arsenicum etc. In the 1918 epidemic Gelsemium and Bryonia were most commonly indicated according to the following extracts.

In 1921 W.A. Dewey MD., published a paper in the Journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy entitled "Homeopathy in Influenza – A Chorus of Fifty in Harmony". The following extracts are from this paper.

    • In Philadelphia 26,795 cases of influenza treated by homeopathic physicians had a mortality rate of 1.05% compared with the conventional mortality rate of 30%.

    • In Connecticut 30 physicians reported 6,602 cases with 55 deaths, (<1%).

    • Dr. Roberts in Connecticut also reported 81 cases in the transport service all treated with homeopathic treatment and all recovered.

    • In a factory in Chicago, Dr. Wieland reported influenza in 8000 workers with one death. All were treated with Gelsemium. He reports no aspirin was used and no vaccines.

    • Dr Williams in Rhode Island reported no losses from influenza and a 2.1% loss in those that developed pneumonia. He observed that doctors using aspirin as the main treatment were having a 60% mortality in those patients that developed pneumonia.

    • Dr. Sappington reports that from 1500 influenza cases recorded by the Homeopathic Medical Society of the District of Columbia only 15 died. Recoveries in the National Homeopathic Hospital was 100%

    • In Ohio, Dr. McCann treated 1000 cases of influenza and had no losses. He says all credit must be given to homeopathy.

    • Raymond Siedel decided to become a homeopathic doctor when he was a 10 year old delivery boy for a local homeopath. He said "I saw that people who were taking Aspirin were dying, about half those who were drinking a lot of whiskey were dying, and those that received homeopathic remedies were living."

    • It was generally observed by homeopaths in the US at the time that the use of Aspirin was a major cause of deaths during the influenza epidemic. Its indirect action came through the fact that aspirin was taken until prostration resulted and the patient developed pneumonia.

    • In Kentucky Dr. Huff wrote " I almost invariably gave (homeopathic medicines) Gelsemium or Bryonia. I hardly ever lost a case if I got there first, unless the patient had been sent to a drug store and bought Aspirin, in which event I was likely to have a case of pneumonia on my hands."

(this is something i'm reposting from the "avian flu" thread)

in case anyone is new to the vaccine issue, read this:

http://www.nexusmagazine.com/article...esearcher.html (i can't get this link to work- you can go to nexus and get it from there.)

i have also read that this "virus" (the whole question of what is a virus is being reconsidered also) was engineered from samples preserved from the "spanish flu" pandemic in 1919.

homeopathic nosodes are analogous to vaccines but utterly safe and effective, used and tested for over 200 years. we regularly take influenzinum (flu), carcinosinum (cancer), and one for dengue fever. if you want to protect yourself from the possible coming weirdnesses, *!get healthy!*, and learn about herbs and homeopathy. if you have to see a professional, go to a naturopath.

here's heartening info about the historical effectiveness of homeopathy in epidemics:

Some history of the treatment of epidemics with Homeopathy by Julian Winston From its earliest days

and a wonderful story about a successful homeoprophylaxis program (yup, that's what they call it) in cuba last summer, for a serious, seasonally-occurring bacterial disease. millions of doses were delivered to millions of people for a cost of $200,000 US. and it worked! while vaccines never have:

Successful Use of Homeopathy In Over 2.5 Million People Reported From Cuba Official Homeopathy Resource

I really doubt it in this case, it just doesn't have that feel to it. The theory on Chemtrails are that they administer something like aluminum (or something else) to dull the processes in the brain - that and the mix of fluoride in our water.

If it was something in the Chemtrails, it would be far more spread out and random. These cases are more like the spread of a flu - people coming into contact with each and spreading a disease.

I feel it is a man-made fault, but not deliberate. Something that intentional would take hold really fast and kill off millions, if not billions before it could hit the media and get everyone's attention.

Oh, well then let me tell you the cure - Antioxidants, get your body stored up on them, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and something called OPC. All these things come from plants - some of the best are of the red, purple and brown hue. However, if you really want to store up on antioxidants, take some quality supplements (liquid are best, it allows the digestive system to get the most out of it)

most disease entities- viruses, bacteria, mold, etc. need and acid environment to grow. it is possible to be too alkaline but not likely to happen. most people are way over-acid.

a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables is what alkalizes you.

fruits and veggies are the most important foods, medicines and supplements! there is no other way!

EXACTLY! I am so glad you said that because antioxidants help your body to become more alkaline. Eating a lot of meat (especially red meat) causes the body to be more acidic. (No it's not as simple as not eating citrus fruit, lol - that actually helps the body to be more alkaline)

Some updates on swine flu, I tried to find an article that is as fact based (not hype) as I could:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
By The Associated Press The Associated Press – 20 mins ago

Key developments Sunday on swine flu outbreaks:

    • Deaths: 103, all in Mexico. 22 confirmed as swine flu, 81 suspected.

    • Sickened: 1,614 in Mexico, suspected or confirmed; 20 confirmed in U.S.; 6 confirmed in Canada; 13 suspected in New Zealand; 1 confirmed and 17 suspected in Spain; 1 suspected in France; 1 suspected in Israel; 1 suspected in Brazil.

    • Locations in Mexico: 17 states, including Mexico City, Mexico State, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Baja California and San Luis Potosi. Some, including Oaxaca, Mexico City and Baja California, have tourist areas, but authorities have not said where in these states the outbreaks occurred.

    • Locations in U.S.: 8 in New York, 7 in California, 2 in Kansas, 2 in Texas and 1 in Ohio.

    • Safety measures in Mexico: In Mexico City, surgical masks given to subway passengers, public events canceled, schools and public venues closed and church services postponed. President Felipe Calderon has assumed new powers to isolate infected people. World Bank is providing Mexico with more than $200 million in loans to help with the outbreak.

    • Safety measures in U.S: Roughly 12 million doses of Tamiflu being moved from federal stockpile to be delivered to states. Travelers at border asked about travel to flu-stricken areas. St. Francis Preparatory School in New York City, where eight cases are confirmed, closed Monday and Tuesday. St. Mel's Catholic School in Fair Oaks, Calif., closed until at least Thursday as officials investigate possible infection of seventh-grader. Fourteen schools in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District in Texas, including high school where two cases are confirmed, closed for at least the next week.

    • Safety measures worldwide: Airports screening travelers from Mexico and United States for flu symptoms. China, Russia, Taiwan and Bolivia plan to put anyone with symptoms under quarantine. Hong Kong and South Korea warn against travel to Mexico City and three provinces. Italy, Poland and Venezuela advised citizens to postpone travel to affected areas of Mexico and the United States. Some countries increasing screening of pigs and pork imports or banning them outright.

Important for Swine Flu Epidemic: Homeopathy Successfully Treated Flu Epidemic of 1918
    by Melanie Grimes, citizen journalist
See all articles by this author
    Email this author

(NaturalNews) Homeopathy was successful in treating the flu epidemic of 1918 and can provide answers to questions about the 2009 Swine Flu. Homeopathy can provide quick and inexpensive relief for symptoms of the flu. A system of medicine based on the principles of "like cures like," homeopathy uses plant, mineral and animal sources for the natural flu remedies. Homeopathy is based on ideas from ideas dating back to Egyptian medicine. The term "homeopathy" was coined by the medical doctor and medical reformer, Samuel Hahnemann in the 1800s. Homeopathic remedies have been used to treat flu symptoms for two centuries.

Was homeopathy successful in treating the flu epidemic of 1918?
    Yes.
While the mortality rate of people treated with traditional medicine and drugs was 30 percent, those treated by homeopathic physicians had mortality rate of 1.05 percent.
Of the fifteen hundred cases reported at the Homeopathic Medical Society of the District of Columbia there were only fifteen deaths. Recoveries in the National Homeopathic Hospital were 100%. In Ohio, of 1,000 cases of influenza, Dr. T. A. McCann, MD, Dayton, Ohio reported NO DEATHS.

What homeopathic remedies were used to successfully treat the Spanish flu in 1918?
    Gelsemium and Bryonia
According the Dr. Frank Wieland, MD, in Chicago, "(With) 8,000 workers we had only one death. Gelsemium was practically the only remedy used. We used no aspirin and no vaccines."

Homeopathy was 98% successful in treating the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918?
    Yes.
Ohio reported that 24,000 cases of flu treated allopathically had a mortality rate of 28.2% while 26,000 cases of flu treated homeopathically had a mortality rate of 1.05% . In Connecticut, 6,602 cases were reported, with 55 deaths, less than 1%. Dr. Roberts, a physician on a troop ship during WWI, had 81 cases of flu on the way over to Europe. He reported, "All recovered and were landed. Every man received homeopathic treatment.

How do they know that a virus caused the flu epidemic of 1918, when the first virus was not isolated until 1933?
They don`t. In fact, many believe that the epidemic was actually a vaccine reaction.
When Army vaccinations became compulsory in 1911, the death rate from typhoid vaccination rose to the highest point in the history of the US Army. US Secretary of War Henry L Stimson reported that seven men dropped dead after being vaccinated. He also reported 63 deaths and 28,585 cases of hepatitis as a direct result of yellow fever vaccination during only six months of WW1. According to a report in the Irish Examiner, "The report of the Surgeon-General of the US Army shows that during 1917 there were admitted into the army hospitals 19,608 men suffering from anti-typhoid inoculation and vaccinia. When army doctors tried to suppress the symptoms of typhoid with a stronger vaccine, it caused a worse form of typhoid paratyphoid. But when they concocted an even stronger vaccine to suppress that one, they created an even worse disease Spanish flu."

Did the flu strain that caused the 1918 flu ever return?
    Yes.
The 1918 `Spanish Flu` was first reported in an American military, Camp Funston, Fort Riley, in troops preparing for WW1 and receiving 25 vaccinations. According to the CDC, the same flu strain appeared only one other time: in 1976. This was again at a US army base, Fort Dix, and again, was seen in recently vaccinated troops, and only in them. The virus has not appeared anywhere else.

Is homeopathy successful in treating the modern flu?
    Yes.

What can I do to prevent the flu?
Good food, clean living, rest and exercise are the basic ingredients.
There are certain nutrients that have been shown to help enhance the immune system, such as echinacea, vitamins C, E and beta carotene, zinc, and elderberries.
