I have been practicing meditation for over eleven years, and one thing I highly reccomend is to begin by focusing on your breathing NOTHING ELSE. Sit for 10-15 minutes a day and just BREATH. In through your nose for four slow counts, out through your mouth for four counts. Set a timmer if you need to. Whenever your thoughts try to interfere, just let them go and concentrate on your breathing again - focus right on your upper lip - feel the air going in and out. I know it sounds silly, but once you can sit for 10-15 minutes without any thoughts intruding, then the rest will fall into place.

    Hope this helps!

Why does meditation and the thought of let go of my thinking life freak me out so much? I feel like I will lose myself... or is that the point?

    GUS bless you

I understand exactly how you feel! The first time I tried meditation I was 18 and the realization that I was not who I thought I was scared me so baddly that I didn't attempt it again for another ten years.

When you are approaching the "zone" of meditation there comes a point when you feel yourself step back and watch your thoughts continuing to zoom about. Your brain is still worrying about your finances and the dent in your car and your problems at work, with your spouse, with your children, with the "D" that little Johnny brought home on his report card and whether or not you should start dieting again, but you are able to step back and it suddenly becomes clear that these thoughts are not who you are! You exist independently of all the thoughts and concerns that you thought made up your life. It is a truly liberating experience and when you come back to yourself, it is with a knowledge of being more and of what is really important. I'm sorry, but I can't explain it much clearer than that
