What book are you currently reading?

I'm reading several books at the moment because I buy so many at once and I'm too impatient to wait until I finish one to start the next.

I'm reading The Ancient Secrets of The Flower of Life Vol. 2 by Drunvalo Melchizadek,
Photovoltaic Design and Installation for Dummies by Ryan Mayfield and
The Weiser Field Guide to Ascension - The meaning of miracles and shifts in consciousness past and present by Cal Garrison

I'm also in the Gulf of Mexico for 28 days lacking stimulating conversation. Help.

Welcome--the conversation here can wax and wane. For general conversation, you may want to post in the "Ramble" thread a few down in the Cafe section--a lot of us talk about what's current in our lives there.

Let's see--a friend's novel, A Peculiar Slice of Lemon Cake, a bunch of 19th century stuff, and romance novels are next on the list. On really want to read very soon list: The Checklist Manifesto (about medical/hospital processes), The Pain Chronicles by Melanie Thernstrom. Various manga.

Are you on an oil rig or a ship?

I'm actually on a liftboat. It's not a ship but not a barge. Somewhere in between with a 3 story cabin and 3 legs that jack up and down. We can drive around like a ship, we have the deck space to work on like a barge and we can jack up next to a platform. And thanks for the advice. I am a noob fumbling in the dark searching for the light switch.

With how many people? Marine biology, fishing, gulf cleanup, or corporate stuff? Sounds fascinating, but I bet it gets confining. Do you get mail, or have to get books via computer/Kindle? Thank goodness for internet access.

Not at all, you started with Platos republic. I still haven't read it yet, lol. I'm sure there is some kind of pattern there that proves you are an exceptional individual.
    Great list!

The number of people varies. Right now we have a few geophysicists on board with a combination of technicians and specialists. This job is mainly seismic activity testing and reading. Scanning the gulf floor in grids. I just came off the oil spill clean up off the coast of louisiana. We were helping to protect a certain group of islands that brown pelicans use for breeding grounds. And it was an incredible experience. Not just because we were doing something great but a few of the people I met on that job were lightworkers at the least. I've been doing this for 6 years so the confining part is nothing new, lol. I actually enjoy the peace away from the chaos of everyday life back on land. I do the majority of my reading out here. And I think everyone I know has told me that I need to get a kindle but the truth is I love books. I keep an extra book sack with me out here just for books. I'll actually have to buy another bookshelf when I get back home this time because I've pretty much run out of room. And yes, I get long winded at a keyboard. The one thing I lack out here at the moment is conversation with like minds.

    Let's see - what am I reading?

Off the Grid by Nick Rossen (sustainable living - solar power etc.)
The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy (this was actually used as a textbook in my daughter's philosophy class, it's a pretty humorous read )
Conversations With God Vol.2 (again - I go through the series about once a year)
Albert Einstein - his life and times

So, FireFly - how many books do you usually go through in a year?

life expectancy- by Dean Koontz (I mostly read his books cause I like him a lot and I dont read many other books from other authors really, I recently (about a year ago haha) bought a lot of books from this author and I left them in my room in order to read on later so if you see me posting later on in this thread its prolly gonna be the same author =P)

also The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas... which really I left unfinished cause the writting style made me bored after a few chapters

I do not tend to read books actually because I leave them unfinished unless they grab my attention, which is something the first author I spoke of can do very well, also I am not really much interested in book reading unless they are science fiction books or the like, but I do read a lot of articles, interesting ones, I like to read about science, the planet, people stories (hero like stories and such), I love to read interesting facts and also psychology or paranormal things, and well lots of things, also cooking and how to make crafts and the like I love to read that as well, I love to read interesting articles on science, interesting facts about food, scientific things, animals, etc. Also bout health, cooking, technology, and pretty much anything that grabs my attention I read.

I like reading several books at once. Right now I'm reading Off the Grid, Nano by Ed Regis, and the Nazi Doctors. I'm sort of losing interest in Off the Grid and the Nazi doctors is too disturbing. Nano is one the most interesting books I've read. It's one of those books that I can't put down. I read a little bit of the bible, Qur'an, or Nag Hamadi almost every day.

The rise and fall of the third riech - by William Shirer ( a great man )
Comprendre l'empire/ Misere du desire et shute! - by Alain Soral ( a very interesting man who knows a lot about what is going on in our world, an ex politician from communisme&right wing / a French philosopher... )
    Books of Oswald Wirth

I love books, when you find some cultural thickness.
In today society there is two different type of book's merchandise vs cultural

This passed year I know I've purchased well over 100 but I know I've read a good bit less. I read so many at once and I don't always finish them because I hit a certain subject pretty hard and then I bounce to the next one so where ever I'm at I just leave the book marks in and at some point I usually come back around and finish them. I read in circles. I always come back to an old subject for reference. I read because I'm on a constant search for something (not sure what but I always feel like I'm getting closer, lol) so it's not quite the same as reading a novel for entertainment. The most I've ever been able to read fiction was when I got into a Kurt Vonnegut phase and bought about 15 of his books. But then I get to a point where I feel like I'm wasting time and I go back to the search. How's that solar book you're reading? That's my side project at the moment. I'd like to be able to understand photovoltaic design enough to maybe come up with ways to make it more affordable for residential use and who knows, maybe I can get in on a volunteer project somewhere. Nice list though. I see we think along the same lines. And I still haven't actually purchased any of those "so and so" and Philosophy books but it seems like I pick one up every time I'm at the book store, lol. One day.

I tried to read The Man in the High Castle by Phillip K. Dick a few months ago and it was the same thing. I forced my way through it as far as I could, and I really wanted to try to get through it, but I gave up within 30 pages. It just seemed like it never actually started, lol. I haven't given up on fiction yet but I have given up on that book. Paranormal was actually my first interest. When I was in the 4th grade I'd get all of the Time Life Unexplained volumes from the library. And yes, I was always different from the rest of the kids, haha. But I'm glad because normal people are dull. Sorry normal people.

OFF THE GRID is actually more an athropological look at the reasons behind why different people are choosing to live off the grid. The writer is traveling all over the US interviewing individuals who live off the grid and getting a look at their homes (if they'll let him). Some won't of course - because they are "off the grid" due to the fact that they want to be under the government's radar (that reason doesn't make a lot of sense though - seeing as that there is still a record of the purchase of the land AND they still have to pay taxes). While others didn't have a choice in the matter. He's interviewing people who are extremely wealthy and could set up uber-sustainable ranches, and people who are living in shacks on the wrong side of the tracks in Arizona - but everyone he talks to is making the conscious choice to remain off the grid. I find it an interesting read

Heh - the philosophy books, I remember reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Philosophy" when it came out, it actually made me laugh out loud in places - the connections they were able to make

“What if you slept? And what if, in your sleep, you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower? And what if,when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand? Ah, what then?”
