Two seemingly opposite terms to describe "seperate" phenomenon. Both relate strongly to the ego-based notion of being "right". In our ego-centered world it is perceived as being critical to be both right and rooted in reality. For the most part, it seems that there is great difficulty in seperating these supposedly clear cut words/ideas. The desire to be right, to know without doubt, is contrary to the goal. To satisfy the ego requires lines to be drawn in places that they should not, or fantastic notions are needed to fulfill the requirements that make reality possible. I believe in every person, and more acutely so in the new generations, the parts of the mind that lie beyond ego's grasp are active constantly. These areas don't need to distinguish between words, everything is one, existance is only what it is. This results in very composite and often ambiguous people.
Even after entering into a level of enlightenment, the ego persists. It's presence can't be denied, similarly as what lies beyond it and before it cannot. All entities work to create our conglomerate being. Enlightenment, to me, is a mindfulness of all these things and their affect on human conciousness. Assigning too many labels, characteristics, and even quizzes to determine if you might be one of these labels.. cheapens this equilibrium. I don't want to be overly critical of anyone, but creating a multiple choice quiz to determine whether or not -- or how special you are using a ranking system is folly. Ranking and categorizing something insists that certain criteria are more important than others, when it is the things that aren't categorizable that are important. The things that words can't describe are what really holds society together. Words are the lines drawn by ego to define a world of false security and stability.
I don't know how, but my entire life has followed a very clear and concise path of wisdom and allowance. I never knew where I was going, only that wherever it was - was exactly where I wanted to be. I knew I wasn't special, unique perhaps but no more so than anyone else is unique. I didn't realize that was what made me really special. I've always had a strong empathy for others, despite my impatience with them at times. Even as a child I had a parent mentality towards others, often much older than myself. Today I still routinely have elders come to me for council on some matters, twice or more my age. It never ceases to surprise me the people that come around for advice or simply conversation out of the blue (or indigo..). Everyone tells me I'm special but I still don't believe them, I am what I am, being special or better than anyone doesn't appeal to me. I realized that I find a place in my mind that allows me to act more as a force of nature (a composite force, many energies combined) than a singular concious being with dichromatic goals. From this perspective things appear much different than social connotations would allow.
I can't understand all, but I know well many of the feelings of alienation from this world. It may not be that your ancestry lies in or from the stars or from alien source. I contend that society is the illusion/fantasy. It stands in the face of the closest thing humans can come to 'reality' and denies it. Human society is alien to this world. Our great achievements almost hold us back from ever experiencing an amazing inner world, by focusing almost entirely on outward things (such as status and attention on an internet forums). These ego concerns create the nessecity for things that have no purpose in a new world, status -- power, greed, insecurity, degredation. Old feelings that go straight to the animal roots of our people.. we now live in something very alien in reference to an animal environment.
I can't say if there was ever a time when humans fully understood their potential or if we are still working to that goal. It seems many of us harken back as if we have already experienced it and wish to return to it. It seems that it could be a manifestation through nature. A new level of evolution, a great birthing of a new energy source, the conglomerate power of human minds on a shared bandwidth. The reaction caused by billions of conciousnesses synchronized into a similar chemical makeup. Breeding out/dilluting but never eliminating ancient reptillian brain functions.
We have to understand that being indigo will soon become very not-special, in that the majority of the population will recognize, encourage, if not posess the "traits". This is a process that is so much larger than any one person no matter their status in this ego-centered world. Being born or growing into witnessing or interacting with the etheric is a naturally logical evolution that is necessary for a new level of development. Seeing in color and seeing two tone, there's much more to "see" than just color. The five are only base level senses.
I find that it's dangerous to create stories to explain one's existance. I can't believe legends like atlantis, aliens constructing pyramids or leaving messages in fields, they are just stories. No matter how good a story sounds, or if it contains messages that I like the sound of, I know that people write stories. People create things to give those stories meaning or history to make them appear legitimate. I don't need stories to know who I am, I just know. I recognize that it might be my function to be lost in the world. I don't need history to back up my existance, a story to justify my attitude, a time or place that I need to define. The Tao insists that once we return to our source anything is possible. I choose to erode the idea of a solid base to cling to, like waves crashing through a dam. I just float away, not lost, my source isn't found in the material world of words and walls.
I recognize we are all sensitive here in a number of ways, and some might interpret my words as an attack, however there is no assault here. Ego is inescapable as well as misleading, blatent disregard for it can be shocking at first. I seek to provide my opinion and experience as best I can put it into words, though I am certain it's the things I can't write in between these lines that will mean the most. Somehow I maintain an equilibrium of imagination and logical progression, in that I frequently witness others going to one extreme or the other. I seek to assist others in finding balance within themselves for the betterment of the world and universe.

Due to any number of reasons (upbringing, religion, societal programming, experiences) no two people will ever view the world in quite the same way - making each of us unique - and special, for no one can offer the same view of the world that we do, nor the same experiences or the same reactions to the experiences or lessons learned from the same.
In a world where true individuality is discouraged and only individuality that meets the "norm" is encouraged, it is easy to see how any number of beliefs that set one apart from the crowd would be welcomed with open arms, whether this "apartness" is a beief in a rapture or in the second coming of the Great Flying Spagetti Monster (may you be touched by his noodly apendage).

Being special doesn't have to mean that you're perceived as superior. It only means that you have more differences than most of others' uniquenesses. So you stand out... in a positive way, to the one who perceives you as special.

promethues i dont agree with the thing you quoted. the person is superficially right in that its a sentence and there are words in it but generally she is mistaken.
joanna newsom resides purely in a fantasy world and yet that generates her income.
many scientists dont speak particularly well with others and have a slightly zealous look in there eye.
that is because they are creating new realities using there mind.
i dont exactly see how that course in miracles would actually teach anyone to achieve by saying that your mind and your life are seperate and when you draw power from fantasy you pervert reality.
both are beautiful creations and using them fully is part of the miracle.
so i must say im annoyed by ur course in a miracles.

hello Protonexus...interesting,.....but...you could of said it a bit quicker...
Take a beach full of sand 2 miles long...pick up one particle grain of sand....that is the Earth ,and the sum of its intelligence...the rest of the sand 2 miles and billions of particles is extra-terrestrial intelligence...we as INDIGOS OR CRYSTALS have 2 or 3 grains of sand worth of intellect....so with humility i say we are all still on a very big learning curve....however we can still get prepared for the battle ahead before the sands of time runs out
