Article: 5 Easy Steps to an Alkaline Diet

    http://crazysexylife.com/2011/5-easy...alkaline-diet/

As we all know, Kris is a huge fan of the alkaline diet (see here, here and here). In her Top 15 Crazy Sexy Diet Tips, her second most important tip is to “Learn about pH, the acid/alkaline balance, and say goodbye to the standard American diet (SAD), acidic diet in favor of alkaline foods.”

However, I know from experience that this is easier than it sounds. In this little tutorial I want to make the alkaline lifestyle easy to start, implement and stick to. Since 2004 I have made it my mission to make the alkaline lifestyle easy. I’ve learned from experience and trial and error. As with much in life, abundant health is easier than we’ve been led to believe. Remember these core principles:

    - Take it slowly, taking baby steps, day-by-day, rather than going full-on from day 1!
    - You’re not meant to be perfect. You’re still supposed to enjoy life. Enjoy a day off, have treats, enjoy your favorite foods and socialize. Don’t feel like to be healthy you have to change your personality.

This is meant to fit your lifestyle, not the other way around!

    5 Steps to Living Alkaline

    1. Hydration
My research has found that around 90 percent of people are chronically dehydrated and this is having a massive impact on their quality of life. It amazes me when people say that they don’t really drink water! How do they get through the day? They must feel so crappy!

Getting properly hydrated will make a huge difference to your health, energy, vitality and immunity. Everything is influenced by the quantity and quality of the water you drink. Aim to filter your water and make it alkaline with a pH between 8 and 9.5.

    Hydration Action Steps
    - Drink 6-18 cups of water each day. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces.
    - Drink lemon water: 2 cups of lukewarm, filtered water with freshly-squeezed juice from 1/4 lemon. It helps cleanse the digestive system, ignite your metabolism and buffer excess acids. Despite the lemons being acidic in their natural form, lemon water is alkaline-forming to the body once consumed.
    - Enjoy organic herbal teas such as Rooibos, peppermint and nettle.

    2. Go Green!
The alkaline diet is also about alkaline foods. There is conflicting information on the Internet about which foods are alkaline and which are acid-forming. This simple rule covers 90 percent of foods:

Alkaline foods are those you already know are good for you: fresh vegetables, salads, leafy greens, low-sugar fruits, nuts, seeds and healthy oils; unrefined, organic, high-water-content foods.

And acidic foods are those you already know are bad for you: refined foods, fast foods, trans-fats, meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine, white bread, white pasta and rice, condiments, alcohol, chocolate, chips, ice cream and pizza.

Aim for a ratio of 80/20: Consume 80 percent alkaline foods to 20 percent acidic foods.

    3. Transition
Take it slowly! Almost everyone who I have ever coached or had contact with who tries to do the alkaline diet 100 percent from day one fails within a week and usually after 24 hours.

The alkaline diet is not restrictive at all, not difficult and is really simple, once you’ve gotten used to it. People who try to be perfect from day one miss the chance to learn, experiment and find meals that work for them and their family. They end up feeling hungry, fed up and restricted.

It is far better to transition and get there slowly, by sticking to it for the long-term rather than being perfect for a day or two and then crashing.

    4. Oxygen
By doing a simple breathing exercise once or twice per day you give your body a huge helping hand in removing these acids. Plus it allows you to stop, focus your mind, visualize and relax, which is also nicely alkalizing.

Sit comfortably, close your eyes and follow this simple breathing pattern:

    - Breathe in for the count of 2.
    - Hold for a count of 8.
    - Breathe out for a count of 4.
    - Repeat 10 times.

    5. Supplements
This is one of the most overwhelming and confusing parts of the alkaline diet for most beginners. There are so many supplements out there, all promising different things and all claiming they are better than the others.

Here are the core supplements I recommend:

Green powder: This is a combination of powdered grasses, fruits, vegetables and sprouts with a focus on wheatgrass and barley grass.

Alkaline water: You can make alkaline water in a number of ways including using a water ionizer, pH drops or adding freshly squeezed lemon.

Alkaline minerals: The primary way that your body buffers acids is through the alkaline minerals: sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium.

Omega oils: Taking an omega 3 supplement or an omega oil blend including omega-3, -6 and -9 is really beneficial. I recommend Udo’s Choice Omega Oil Blend. Udo is a world-leading researcher in omega oils for nutrition and he has made a fantastic product.

The alkaline diet is simple when taken slowly, when you aim for 80/20 rather than perfection and when you still allow yourself treats and fun. Take it easy, have a sense of humor with it and enjoy it.

Keep it simple and if you mess up, don’t beat yourself up! Go for a walk, refocus and just start again! The rest of your life is a long and interesting journey, so enjoy it with the health, energy and vitality that the alkaline lifestyle brings!

Ross Bridgeford is the co-founder of Energise for Life, the world’s largest alkaline diet website. After seven years, he’s now known as “The Alkaline Diet Guy’” after writing over 600 articles and 100 videos on living with health, vitality and alkalinity!

thanks evergreen for posting this excellent writing. i really appreciate the style of the writing and what it says, just getting to the bottom line and simplyfying it.

and i always wondered about this:
    - Drink lemon water: 2 cups of lukewarm, filtered water with freshly-squeezed juice from 1/4 lemon. It helps cleanse the digestive system, ignite your metabolism and buffer excess acids. Despite the lemons being acidic in their natural form, lemon water is alkaline-forming to the body once consumed.

cause i get really strong lemon cravings and wondered what that was about. thinking lemon is obviously acidic, so i've tried to figure out if that was a good or bad craving. i generally go with it, if i have them. but seriously sometimes my body tells me really clearly to make a bunch of lemonade.

have you seen the ph water filters? they are really expensive but cool. they make alkaline water, while filtering it. my friend has one at her house

there was some good stuff there. but truthfully...not so much my wave. this article is good that you posted...ah i should forget about whatever critisms i might have. it didnt exactly speak to me...alot of it seemed a bit...o idk what to call it. the happy shiny young "yoga lifestyle expert" kinda turned my stomach a bit. !

thats maybe just me, i know other people love to eat that sort of thing up...i do love yoga, and have been doing it for almost 30 years...but theres this kind of wave with it ...the expensive yuppiefied version of seminar in hawaii style...yeah....that stuff is weird to me. i've been trying not to think on it as such, but more and more this has been irking me over the years. it started (well no actually its almost always bothered me a little cause it seems so disconnected from the yoga of india) but one day when i over heard this "certified for whoever knows what" yoga lady talking really badly about poor people, and how she had to not feel obligated to bring down her prices, and expressing paranoia over those people trying to get into her yoga studio shower rooms.... i was eavesdropping on her, she was someone in this community who likewise turned my stomach a bit with her way, and the things she said were really disturbing. but its more than that, however she kinda made it really noticeable to me...living here in the community i live in this is...well its a weird place i live in...theres kinda lots of that sort of attitude that comes out in a lot of different ways.

i was sitting there thinking about how yogis do yoga on the hot streets of india, generally dont have any money, beg for food, smoke tons of hashish ! thats what the real "yoga lifestyle" was about...i am just saying one extreme part of it, its not all about that but theres an element thats far away from anything that lady was writing, and likely those people who would try to sneak into her showers, or request discount classes would be closer to it just by default..........but certainly a big difference from hopping on a plane to go to hawaii and spend a bunch of money on a seminar pretending to be like a yogi- minus the dirt grime poverty and hashish!

eye yi, just opening my big mouth again =)

its true this really does irk me, quite frequently, whatever this thing is that i try to explain.

those alkaline water filters are cool...too bad they are several thousand dollars a piece. kinda ties into the same issue

Leila I totally know what you mean! I get that feeling off that blog sometimes too. There are a lot of different bloggers there, I like some of them and dislike others. It's definitely not a go-to place for truth, I learned that after I saw soy recommended in a few of the blogs there. Blech... are you kidding? So I think there is some truth there, and I love Kris Carr and the work she is doing in the world, it's still a massive awakening compared to how most people live/eat/care for themselves, and like anything else you have to sift through it to find what's good and what resonates with you.

I just found it today and it is inspiring for me. I doubt I will spend a tremendous amount of time there, but my friend is dealing with cancer and this was really cool to me because this girl beat stage 4 terminal cancer with diet and yoga. Not sure if she did chemo too or not, but inspiring none the less. I also like to see that these 'hipsters' are learning things. Not exactly the women I would spend my afternoon with...but I really don't like spending much time with too many people anyway. :P

Kris didn't use any sort of conventional medical treatment for her cancer. She only uses her doctor to monitor and track her condition. I can't wait til you see the movie. I'm actually planning on buying it soon, even though I've seen it 2-3 times already. I like to watch it whenever I'm feeling down about my health problems. It lifts me up and gets me motivated and positive again.

ha well ....good i am glad i used my big mouth....i guess if you guys can relate somewhat. yeah i read some other articles they were better, by different writers......just that super plastic yoga chick kinda scared me off there! its cool, i dont really know what the whole blog and the girl is about...just my first reaction.
i read some more, if you all think shes cool i bet its better than that writer...

yeah seriously this comes up for me alot, i think about this alot, whatever the underlying theme is there...i cant always quite put my finger on it and i dont even want to... ...not just specifically this...but just something along these lines. i think about this phenomena alot...
theres lots of groovy people here, really kind and wise people here too....but other times...i feel like this place is so fairy tale land, and it is!
we like our little bubble here =) but its kinda disconnected a bit...some of the stuff that happens kinda weirds me out, the way things have been changing too...its not perfect or whatever...but this whole theme, this weirdness... blech what is it quite?
...idk exactly...but it bothers me on a nearly daily basis.

i've had to acknowledge that i naturally dont have prejudice against kinds of people, not by skin color or whatever other arbitrary reasons...but i have been finding to be truthful to myself i am somewhat prejudice against yuppies. i admit it, it kinda sucks, yuppies need love too! and likely as unfair as any other prejudice someone could have...but its weird cause it doesnt seem that way to me...but still it is unfair to be prejudging, and i try to open my mind some, at least be accepting, compassionate...when it unites with $pirituality it really gets me....

Yeah, I can remember being unable to tolerate the book Eat, Pray, Love because of the yuppiness. It just flat out is something I cannot relate to. Grown up yuppies no doubt were the girls and guys I avoided in high school. It really isn't their fault though...society has worked well for them because of their status so they have been blinded.

Yep I remember that. I never did finish the book, and I walked out of the movie. As much as I WANT to like it, I just can't. Neat idea though.

AHHH that's like my favorite book ever! Gasp! lol I guess some relate to it and some don't. Reading her story was like reading my life. I went through something so similar, left a relationship, went traveling by myself. I even had similar moments of talking to God in my bathroom before my boyfriend and I broke up. How is Liz a yuppie? I don't really know what a yuppie is, actually. What does that word mean to you guys? I've never really lived anywhere that people called other people "yuppies".

LOL, it is an older word I guess. Uhm... froo froo? More along the lines of trend followers, and they always have enough money to follow the trends.

ie: Buying a vitamix blender or juicer or whatever because that is what people who juice or blend DO, learning about yoga and taking a hawaiian yoga vacation,... again all for the sake of trend.

I liked the idea of the book, and that whole breakdown in the bathroom but she was just so annoying personally to me. Her wordage and stuff and Julia Roberts....in the movie...ugh...that smile and carefree way she has is so 1989- NOT cute Julia. lulz

But the traveling, the lessons, the reflection...all good stuff. Personality clash I guess.

young urban professionals. from my generation. they were wannabe hippies that were in it because eventually it was cool, but they went on to join the ratrace (in a green, $piritual way), just the way their parents raised them. true hippies broke away and stayed away.
