Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a guru to the Beatles who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, died Tuesday at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop, a spokesman said. He was thought to be 91 years old.

"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age."

Once dismissed as hippie mysticism, the Hindu practice of mind control known as transcendental meditation gradually gained medical respectability.

As one of the older folks on this site, I learned TM in 1975. I have used it for the last 30+ years, and while not a passionate practitioner, it's been a steady spiritual and psychological anchor in my life. At the same time, I have run into some weird TM people and never wanted to be one of them.

I visited the school here in America this past year. No, I wasn't really interested in the school itself, but I do have a mentor that lives in Fairfield. She is a TMer.. she has the badge etc., but one big thing I learned while I was there was that there are fundamentalists and somewhat of "New agers". I agree that there are definitely some nutty TMers, however.. not everyone who practices TM is a nut. TM, the practice itself, it a very profound and great meditation. However, shelling out five grand for it seems weird.

I could talk about this for hours. Just note this: I met some of the coolest people I've ever met in Fairfield, who are so called "TMers".

I wanted to share the most recent picture of Maharishi that was taken. It's kind of funny that he takes on the name "Yogi", yet still has people call him "his holiness"..

There are nutters in all casts and creeds.

I was in an western order buddhists sangha, there were plenty of nutters there that i didnt want to end up like.
