The problem is when the Rebels become the Empire. When the Safekeepers of secrets become the hoarders. When vengeance of the past (witches, Templars, etc) replaces love.

This world in its current state is not ruled by any sort of enlightened people. The meaning of enlightenment has changed throughout the times, when we entered past the italian renaissance and got into the 1700's we assumed rationalism was the new enlightenment. Thanks to the church, we began to forsake mysticism because of the destruction blind faith and dogma brought to humanity via the church and its evil black mass. A small shadowy group, who we can call "planners" (you have the lower rung, the builders) began to in secret, acquiesce power within the grid of many connected Orders. They are a minority but they held enough influence in power, in particular in their secret advancement in Occult sciences, Physics, and technological application (scalar/sub-quantum physics, advance propulsion systems, rouge groups in the C|A/N$A safely tucked under black security programs with the "right" to do whatever the hell they want, funded by trickle-down economics of their superior technologies, and recruitment of the brightest minds).

Sometimes people begin to think, well its their right. The old idea that only those who had been initiated were "fit" or "elect" enough to rule. Telling you that it was God's will all along. The way some of the "families" run things today is at an end. It is inefficient, down-right irresponsible, filled with egotistical notions and the false light of entitlement to empowerment. The perversion of sacred laws, sacred principles and technologies for false promises of temporary power and control. So the conspiracy theorists are targetting the wrong name and group.

The gnostics who formed under the name Illuminati were originally started in order to overthrow the corrupt servants of the Dark Archons. They formed a conspiracy to stop a conspiracy- and what it led to was bloodshed, renaissances, revolutions, and eventually into corruption (for what is there to do once you acquire the power? Human nature is more than just the power of rationalism, eugenics, math, and geometry mixed with the egotistical assumption of being fit to rule over the sheep). They forgot their feminine part which allowed one to have a direct connection with the Goddess and the Godhead itself. Some families took to ensuring the survival of their line by learning to control the minds of others, and even those of their own kind via newly developing genetic and electromagnetic sciences.

I see it as all part of the healing process though. The Matriarchal made mistakes in ancient past, also in times became corrupt, then the Patriarchs started out with great ideals and also became corrupt. And of course the few "pure ones" remained to keep traditions alive, but have remained in secret for the most part for the preservation of ancient teachings which pre-date anything we have muddled in contemporary religion today. They always resurface in its basic principles among the avatars who achieve a level of attainment in which knowing, gnosis, and faith become the trinity they experience directly without the need for external, scholarly, or any outside force to tell them otherwise. They become the living Word, and are often turned into Gods, saints, siddhas, myths, legends or witches, satanists, etc. depending on the time, the culture used for interpretation, and religions that exist in the era.

It is convoluted. There are also dudes who THINK they are the illuminati because their traditions also go back to Babylon and the days when their Gods descended on to Ziggarats and gave them the plans. There were more than one tradition of ancient mysteries, and overtime the magic of evocation and invocation also had its own corrupt practices which became mixed with the more pure principles of spiritual attainment and union with the Godhead. Each culture, race, in context to the time in history interpreted the mysteries in their own way which led both to the advancement of human culture and also many times its destruction.

I see illumination as varying means of enlightenment. Instead of seeking to reflect the light intellectually, to have it come from within as is gifted by the Limitless One. Any person who does is a friend of mine- and is no Satanist or evil in my eyes.
