this sort of fear or hostility toward elitism is sometime a bit also based on some very extrem view of what it can mean being elitist or superior =)

when i was into demoscene, at first i was in little group in france, and it is clear scene never been really active in france around this, but this is international scene, so the competition is made with entry from all europe, each time i have been around really active group either in hacking or demoscene, it was all the time german group, when i started to be in german group it is clear it is another thing =)
german they are very focused on goal and objective and winning the competition, it still come a bit from a notion of superiority, or elitism, the word elite '1337' is often used in the demomaking orhacking scene who is dominated by german or northern europe group, it is not always a bad thing either to be elitist , it can also be a good motivation, even if the nazism and ww2 in general is often in the background to remind also that this concept of superior race or superior nation leads to, even things like bavarian illuminati, or this spirit of perfectionism and 'elitism' it can often be seen also in a sense of domination, and winning competition or battle, and being superior also on others, catholic church is not the last to act this either, but it is also a good vector of motivation and improvement, achievement etc
even domination it is not always to be taken necessarily in a bad sense, king often have a bad image, or seen as unpopular, as in big part because the influence catholic church had on them, or seen lik tyran, but it is not necessarily the only thing a king can represent, and it is not all that about being greedy and sucking monney by force on a population of slave =) it is not the concept of what a king is supposed to represent for population, in france the nobility network coming from feudal area, they had for duty to protect their citizen, it was the main role of lords at that time, peasant had to pay a taxe to them to be protected, and nobility can often almost be seen as a remanant of ancient french pseudo tribal system, they were not always bad guyz and tyran, in fact very few of them were
and they were also accumulating some wealth, but it is not all the time tyranic, ppl who accumulate wealth it mean they are at the top of a pyramid, king are at the top of a pyramid, , noble were also the top of a pyramid, some pyramids are based on material wealth, some on other productions, but when someone get rich or have higher status in the social structure of a population, it is rarely by chance, and it is because they are representing something important for the population, or they are efficient at providing something that is needed by lot of persons, and having a 'way' that is working and providing abundance to their ppl was also a bit the role of noble who were also centralising talented crafters or artists to build castle or cathedrales or other things
