    What are the different types of Yoga?

    What are the most popular types of Yoga out there and what makes them different, and or special for each one vs the other?

    I'm no expert by any means and am still learning... But I've taken more of an interest in yoga recently. I've always had DVDs but now I'm taking classes and doing it by the beach. I think yoga is an amazing way to stretch, exercise, release toxins, and improve immunity and energy flow all while promoting a true sense of peace and well-being within.

    I do vinyasa yoga, which I really like because it's very fluid and connected into each pose. You become aware of your breath and coming into position with each exhale which definitely helps you to stretch even further. It's like the flow of breath into movement. I like doing really challenging poses as it makes you really focus on your body, core, posture and breath all at once.

    My good friend just introduced me to acro yoga recently as well which I'm super excited to get into. It's a mix of acrobatics and yoga poses done with partners. Someone is the base and someone is the flyer. There are so many positions and stretches that can be achieved when not on the ground. I really like the communicative bond with your partner as well. Plus, it's a really beautiful form of yoga!

    Heh - did you guys know that Yoga is not just about the exercises?

    Yoga is a spiritual path. The word, in Sanskrit means "Yoked" and the point of the path is to yoke mind and body together in order to experience this reality as fully and completely as possible.

    In fact, in the days of Patanjali (who wrote the yogasutra of patanjali in the second century BC) Yoga was a meditation practice that had grown from the same roots as the Buddhist traditions (or more precisely, the buddhist traditions had grown out of the ancient Indian practice of Yoga).

    Over the centuries, however, it was found that you could meditate better; more clearly; if your body was in good physical shape and that meditation could be deeper if the chakra centers had been aligned properly through certain kinds of exercise, hence the development and growth of the different kinds of yoga exercises that we enjoy today

    It's been my experience that beyond the poses, it's about breathing. It doesn't matter how far you stretch so long as you can breathe properly is every pose. This helps ease into what SSHenry is talking about.

    The yoga i learn at my school is traditional yoga, based on Patanjali's eight limbs. So it incorporates anything you would learn anywhere else. I don't know how readily available traditional yoga is when everyone wants to practice bikram or watever else. But i say its great, because it has a piece of practice for every aspect of you life and there will definitely be something for everyone in it.

    There's so many different types of Yogas out there, it gets really confusing!

    I've tried Hatha, Yin and Bikram yoga.

    I think it does't really matter what type you do, as long as you find a teacher that corrects your postures well and often and really really focuses on the breath!!!

    The two types of yoga that I've had experience with are kundalini and hatha yoga. I prefer the kundalini.

    Also, although, all the styles have different names, the goal of all yoga is to raise kundalini, and kundalini yoga is supposedly the fastest way to do that.

    If you intended to say "to raise kundalini in the traditional way, bottom up" the answer is no. This is not the goal of every yoga path. A counterexample is Sri Aurobindo's "integral yoga."

    yoga means union with GOD. kundalini is the very climax or pinnacle of yoga.yoga is not just a physical exercise but a spiritual exercise .its about cleaning ur physical body and also the spiritual body of all the impurities.

    One specific yoga path beyond many others is Surat Shabd Yoga.

    Surat Shabd Yoga or Surat Shabda Yoga is a form of spiritual practice that is followed in the Sant Mat and many other related spiritual traditions. Surat means "attention," or "face," which is the outward expression of the soul, shabd means "word" and yoga means "union." The term "word" means the “Sound Current,” the “Audible Life Stream” or the “Essence of the Absolute Supreme Being,” that is, the dynamic force of creative energy that was sent out, as sound vibration, from the Supreme Being into the abyss of space at the dawn of the universe's manifestation, and that is being sent forth, through the ages, framing all things that constitute and inhabit the universe.


    The etymology of "Surat Shabda Yoga" presents its purpose: the "Union of the Soul with the Essence of the Absolute Supreme Being." Other expressions for Surat Shabda Yoga include Sehaj Yoga (an easy path leading to Sehaj or equipoise) The Path of Light and Sound, The Path of the Sants, The Journey of Soul, and The Yoga of the Sound Current.

    An excerpt from an article by David Lane, critizing Ken Wilber's reception of Surat Shabd Yoga -- I'm posting this excerpt because it shows how widespread Surat Shabd yoga is. Radhasoami is the name of a prominent Surat Shabd movement.

    Let's focus this a bit more: How many different shabd yoga gurus are there in the world?

    Answer: we don't know. But if we had to estimate those with followings over 1000 the number is easily over 100 (and that is a very conservative estimate) in India alone! How many of these gurus has Wilber met? How many practitioners of shabd yoga are there?

    Answer: we don't know. But if we had to give an estimate of just Radhasoami followers the number tends to be over 2 million plus (again a low ball figure). How many of these people has Wilber met?

    How many shabd yoga texts or articles are there?

    Answer: we don't know. But according to Faqir Chand, his guru Maharishi Shiv Brat Lal wrote over 3,000 articles and texts himself. One can only guess that the number is in the multiple thousands.
