Can't relax my face when I meditate

So when I meditate I have no problem relaxing my body, but I simply cannot relax my face, specifically my eyes. I can't find a comfortable direction for my eyes to look in behind the eyelids - i usually try to look up but then my eyes tense up. No matter how much I focus on relaxing my eyes it just won't happen. This sounds strange but I feel like it's hindering me. Any advice?

Try looking 'inside'. Seriously, it may sound strange, but imagine your eyes focused back into your head - into the dark if you will - then allow them to see past the dark.

“What if you slept? And what if, in your sleep, you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower? And what if,when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand? Ah, what then?”
    ― Samuel Taylor Coleridge

    Laughing meditation

Try laughing meditation... Just start laughing hysterically until you want to stop. After some time of practicing, your face will naturally be more relaxed. :P

Or of course there is the option of sitting with the tension as opposed to trying to change it.

i found that when meditating, focusing on my breath and feeling as though i am just the air passing through, i become much lighter, and my physical body, i don't notice that tension anymore.

im working threw the same thing, it seems there is alot of tension in my eyes. they used to feel sore when i would try to meditate. now i just let go of them by letting them do what they want. lately they have been twitching alot and one or the other likes to open once i get relaxed. the thing that helps me the most is when i breathe in/out i mentally say and visualize my eyes relaxing. simple things like " i breathe softness into my eyes" definately works with a right outlook and patience. hope this was of some help

Focus your awareness into your belly, your center, your second chakra, your hara (all the same thing). It's what they call in martial arts: too much face ki. Let the ki move down to your belly, and press your tongue tightly against the soft palette. Too much head-ki can lead to more than you can process. Seriously screwed me up in 2004 to go very far when my ki was all messed up.

It is just one small thing . . .
    Ignore the eye movement . . . .
    Don't let it spoil the meditation . . .
    is what I was told.

But I found the patterns interesting,
some linguists feel the the Phrene patterns
in your eye lids became the basis for written language.

I would focus on the patterns, [going with the flow]
["If you can't beat them Join them"] and discovered
that I could control them. Stop them from moving,
start them moving, hold one in place, combine one
with another. Bring them to rest . . . . let them float
    free in a spherical space . . . .

All in a form of meditation I had not discovered before.
    Be in harmony,
    be in beauty.

Forget the eyes. Your eyes move with your thoughts, notice it. There is nothing you can do with your eyes if your thoughts aren't settled first. But don't fight with your thoughts either, let them wander around with full force. The key to not get lost into your thoughts is to concentrate on your relaxation in your body. Make all efforts to lose all tension - whatever thoughts there are, body must be at ease without tension.
I for example always start my meditation with eyes open and eyes at first move around in all directions, but I just sit and relax and just be here. After a while thoughts settle down and eventually I want to close my eyes and just exist with my being.

It also helps me settle into meditation by focusing on my breathing for the first few minutes. This might allow you to forget about your eyes. Take long, deep breaths, breathe into your lower belly, focus on the air filling your body, and release any tension on the exhales. After a few minutes, allow your breathing to return to normal.

thanks for all the advice, I've been trying these all and it is definitely helpful. in case anyone else has problems, i've noticed it also helps to just try as much as possible to dissociate my body and spirit, so my body seems like a separate entity. then it immediately relaxes.

I strongly advise against that path...though since this is helping it is revealing.

Your ki is not balanced in your body. Running from your body will not fix this, it just hides it. It's good to be aware of excess face ki, but it is bad to divide body and soul needlessly.
