A very insightful article. I can seem myself in the description as having been a potential target at some point in my life or other, but for the most part I'm pretty intuitive, and not the kind of person who "takes" very well to being manipulated. I tend to avoid these kinds of people instinctively.
So fortunately, I've never been a romantic victim. My problems with them tend to be in social or business situations where its more difficult to get away.

For example, my mother-in-law is a grade A one. Fortunately she lives 6 hrs away and I only have to be around her a couple of times a year. My wife will only talk to her on the phone once a month or so. When we go to visit my wife's family, we have taken to staying in a motel rather than at her house. My wife and I a fully aware of what she is and we exhaust tremendous physic energy shielding ourselves from her. We have to remain civil however, in order to keep in touch with my father in law, whom the Witch has stuffed away in a nursing home.

Another place where these types are a problem is in the workplace. I've met more there than anywhere else. Dealing with a psycho co-worker or even worse, a boss is exhausting. But if you are aware, half the battle is won. It just takes awareness and perseverance . Their karma will get them sooner or later, and their malevolent manipulations will eventually come home to roost and the universe sends them away. Fortunately I'm retired now and do not have to subject myself to that kind of scenario.
