Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with Ancient Egypt. One of their most populr deities was the goddess Isis.
The sect of Isis grew in popularity around the same time as Christianity. I wonder what would have happened if Isis had become the most dominant religion instead of Christianity.
She was the daughter of Nut & Geb in a forbidden matrimony. Isis was the wife of Osiris, and mother of Horus.
Others more versed in mythology & Paganism will hopefully contribute to a meaningful discussion.

Wow,I keep coming across your threads unintentionaly. Yeah, the image of Isis holding the baby Horus is the basis of Mary holding the baby Jesus. If you look further down the Nile you will similar images in ancient African sculptures/art depicting the same image. These are archetypes woven into the subconcious of humanity.If you look at ancient Sudan they had pyramids and hieroglyphics that predate Egyptian Pyramids. This is why I think humans have lost some of their power and inginuity along the way.For instance we all know the statistic about how much of our brain power we use. Was this so when civilization (supposedly) first apeared on earth? I personally don't think so. I love this stuff great thread topics. Thanks

I love Ancient Egypt. It's just the Egyptian government ripped me off with the King Tut exhibit. They didn't have the mask or coffin.I generally prefer the Romans. Probably due to Conan the Barbarian's influence.
Oh well, the Romans loved Isis so they couldn't have hated eachother too much.

Some Romans left rome and became Egyptians, same with the Greeks. Thats why if you look at early heiroglyphics, the Egyptians were darker skinned. After the Romans and Greeks intermingled they became more Arabic looking. A similar thing happened in Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. So the Egyptians and Romans were very much in love, maybe the bitterness came when they fell out of love.

Isis...probably of all egyptian gods/godesses the most accessible in terms of communicating with on a more personal level.....

i call most of egyptian gods...the sleeping gods...they are so powerful that only intensly telepathically do they really speak...

I did not know that Horus was a sun deity. That is fascinating.

I have this book filled with pictures of temples of Hathor. Isis is feautured in some of them.The Island of Philae is breath-taking.

Sekhmet as well is a sun deity...a goddess....she is awsome for knowledge and justical truth

The Egyptians had a sun goddess? That's interesting. I like the Norse goddess Sonne.

Does Isis's sister Nethys have a specific role?
My books say nothing really about her, other than being Anubis's Mom.
People online say she was a darkness goddess.
My video game (Age of Mythology) says death goddess. I know it's not the best resource.

We need threads about all sorts of deities, ancient or young, lovely or frigthening.

I never heard of that movie before. I know zeitgeist means "the essence of the time".

The time Isis was worshipped was the Classical Age. I love it. You know, I have hoped that I am some way descended from Cleopata & Mark Anthony. I love Ancient Rome.

It's interesting how the Romans could identify Ceres with Demeter and Isis. I thought that the One Goddess was a modern movement.

I am wondering how Isis felt when Nethys cheated with Osiris. I heard that Nethys got Osiris drunk and the result was Anubis.
Of course I'm relying on history books that seem to be different.

That would make sense to me. There are so many variations of the Egyptian creation myth alone.

not quite....again like i say about the bible...read with heart and there you shall find truth....its very much based on symbolism...the stories are meant to invoke mystery, mysticism, divinity...its the history of humanity in our myths and legends....it is that what we carry spiritulism...well at least part of it...
