I can't speak for the literal existence of "ascended masters" but logic would seem to dictate that if they exist, that they are far beyond our concepts and that none of our labels would necessarily fit them.

ascended means enlightened.....therefore they can still be alive ..secondly
An ascended master is a being that has reached a high level of understanding and spiritual awareness....

Just by judging your answer to the questions posed. I'd say that Indigo's are ascended masters... but for me once you've reached enlightenment then you move on to whatever it is we do. I don't think anyone who has ascended in a previous lifetime would have to return to learn more.

Ascended masters can be any shade of colour including indigo...once you have reached enlightment , then you go and teach the deaf and the blind

I agree with sshenry, if they do exists, they are beyond us, it doesnt mean at one time they werent on our level of vibration, but I personally think they have ascended past us. Indigo in my opinion is just a label, its to show a certain vibrational level, with certain traits, responsibilities and challenges right now in the present.

There is a great book I stumbled upon recently at one of my clients houses. It is called Journey of Souls I can't remember the author off the top of my head but it is written by a hypnotist who takes people back to their death in a previous life to study their perceptions of the after life. It covers the moment of deathand how the spirit feels and what the experience of the spiritual world is like. He has tested tons of people (I can't remember the exact number), but the consistencies are amazing. He asks the people allot of questions about wether the spirits have identities and all of them say yes. He asks them to explain how they can tell who is who in certain situations and the talk about a glow that the spirit emits. They consistantly say that the newest spirits have a white glow and as the progress along their assencion the density of their energy increses. As the density increses the color of the glow changes. First it turns yellow. Next it gradualy becomes red then it goes blue as it travels through the spectrum. Eventualy it becomes dark and dense until it is a almost invisible color.

The people consistantly talk about going to a learning center in which they enjoy studying their past lives with their peers or equivilently ascended souls. They look at holographic books, that have no words, about their past lives. They work in small groups and have a teacher who is usually not fully ascended but is most commonly glowing of a bluish color.

I find it interesting how the glow coincides with the color of stars and auras. I feel there is a connection but I am not an expert. I am just attempting to connect dots. Peace

We are all constantly ascending. I think we are supposed to ascend from where we start. If we are talking from a vedic perspective. Indigos are born ascended masters of the throat chakra the 5th chakra and our purpose is to ascend to the other higher chakras. Many people are ascended masters of the 3rd chakra the navel. They too shall ascend to the higher chakras. Ascencion is constant enlightenment is an impermanent experience related to spiritual breakthrough it is personal and can not be judged by an objective viewpoint. You know if you have reach an enlightenment or not. It is important to note that it takes less effort and time for an indigo in the present to ascend than it took an ancient master of the 3rd chakra. The nature of time is telescopic anyway so that just adds to the velocity. Anyway when was the last time you met an enlightened person? Enlightenment is such a condescending term. Anyone who claims enlightenment is suspect in my perception, because even if they are whats the point of claiming it?People should experience enlightenment multiple times in life if they are on the right path, but talking about enlightenment is like talking about the details what your orgasms are like with your soulmate.
