Many times - and I think that the cause(s) can be any number of things:

1) It could be a memory triggered from a memory (mis-firing synapse that causes the memory of that particular smell to be triggered)

2) It could be a past-life memory intruding on real life

3) It could be that you are tuning in to someone - somewhere - who IS smelling that particular smell at that particular moment.

Or

4) You could be imagining it

I've had all of the above happen - to try to sort it out I keep a coincidence log - a small notebook - in which I record any unusal and/or strange events. Sometimes I am able to link them together at a later point in time - sometimes they remain a mystery
