I think there is a good explanation for that! When we are awake you have your conscious mind working (your present thoughts etc) and you have your involuntary mind (the subconscious part of you that controls your physical movements) so when you are using your body to the full your subconscious mind, the part of your brain that controls movement is working hard and your 'thinking' mind has less energy going into it. WHen you exhaust your body, or don't use it your subconscious hasn't got to work as hard to keep your body active so your 'conscious' mind has more energy to think and to expand without the need of physical movement getting in the way of it. Why do you think when you lie down at night you can hear your thoughts and worries of the entire day running through your head? As soon as your brain stops concentrating of physical movement - the mind has a chance to say "Hello!!"
