    Planets

This ad goes away when you register.
I thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to the planets in our solar system

    Mercury
    Venus
    Earth
    Mars
    Jupiter
    Saturn
Uranus (yoorenus people c'mon with the jokes already )
    Neptune
    Pluto

The comparative sizes of the planets and the Sun
Thanks to Kineto for this one!

    Jupiter's Atmosphere

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._animation.gif
This is a clip of the atmospheric movement on Jupiter. Wait for this one if you have the patience, believe me it is worth it

    Article from Nasa about Jupiter:
    http://www.nasa.gov/worldbook/jupiter_worldbook.html

    Quote Originally Posted by Wikipedia

Jupiter's upper atmosphere is composed of about 88-92% hydrogen and 8-12% helium by percent volume or fraction of gas molecules (see table to the right). Since a helium atom has about four times as much mass as a hydrogen atom, the composition changes when described in terms of the proportion of mass contributed by different atoms. Thus the atmosphere is approximately 75% hydrogen and 24% helium by mass, with the remaining one percent of the mass consisting of other elements. The interior contains denser materials such that the distribution is roughly 71% hydrogen, 24% helium and five percent other elements by mass. The atmosphere contains trace amounts of methane, water vapor, ammonia, and silicon-based compounds. There are also traces of carbon, ethane, hydrogen sulfide, neon, oxygen, phosphine, and sulfur. The outermost layer of the atmosphere contains crystals of frozen ammonia.[11][12] Through infrared and ultraviolet measurements, trace amounts of benzene and other hydrocarbons have also been found.[13]

The atmospheric proportions of hydrogen and helium are very close to the theoretical composition of the primordial solar nebula. However, neon in the upper atmosphere only consists of 20 parts per million by mass, which is about a tenth as abundant as in the Sun.[14] Helium is also depleted, although to a lesser degree. This depletion may be a result of precipitation of these elements into the interior of the planet.[15] Abundances of heavier inert gases in Jupiter's atmosphere are about two to three times that of the sun.

Based on spectroscopy, Saturn is thought to be similar in composition to Jupiter, but the other gas giants Uranus and Neptune have relatively much less hydrogen and helium.[16] However, because of the lack of atmospheric entry probes, high quality abundance numbers of the heavier elements are lacking for the outer planets beyond Jupiter.

The color one is 14 snap shots animated over 24 rotations of Jupiter which took place between the dates of 10/31 and 11/09 of the year 2000.

"The first color movie of Jupiter from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows what it would look like to peel the entire globe of Jupiter, stretch it out on a wall into the form of a rectangular map, and watch its atmosphere evolve with time.

"The brief movie clip spans 24 Jupiter rotations between Oct. 31 and Nov. 9, 2000.

"Various patterns of motion are apparent all across Jupiter at the cloudtop level seen here. The Great Red Spot shows its counterclockwise rotation, and the uneven distribution of its high haze is obvious. To the east (right) of the Red Spot, oval storms, like ball bearings, roll over and pass each other. Horizontal bands adjacent to each other move at different rates. Strings of small storms rotate around northern-hemisphere ovals. The large grayish-blue "hot spots' at the northern edge of the white Equatorial Zone change over the course of time as they march eastward across the planet. Ovals in the north rotate counter to those in the south. Small, very bright features appear quickly and randomly in turbulent regions, candidates for lightning storms.

"The clip consists of 14 unevenly spaced timesteps, each a true color cylindrical projection of the complete circumference of Jupiter, from 60 degrees south to 60 degrees north. The maps are made by first assembling mosaics of six images taken by Cassini's narrow-angle camera in the same spectral filter over the course of one Jupiter rotation and, consequently, covering the whole planet. Three such global maps -- in red, green and blue filters -- are combined to make one color map showing Jupiter during one Jovian rotation. Fourteen such maps, spanning 24 Jovian rotations at uneven time intervals comprise the movie. The maps were reduced in scale by a factor of two to make them accessible on the Internet at reasonable rates. Occasional appearances of Io, Europa, and their shadows have not been removed.

"The smallest visible features at the equator are about 600 kilometers (about 370 miles) across. In a map of this nature, the most extreme northern and southern latitudes are unnaturally stretched out.

"Cassini is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C.

And for the black and white one:
One image was taken every Jupiter day (approximately 10 hours). These pictures were taken from 01/06 to 02/03, 1979 ; and Voyager 1 flew from 58 million to 31 million kilometers from Jupiter during that time.

yes i was thinking to mention the planets and their satellites...but then I figured well the satellites are associated with the planets so if we talk about them, talking about their moons is natural. What annoys me with the nasa site is they keep calling the atmosphere the planets surface because it is a gas giant, yet they acknowledge that their may be a real surface beneath the gas although a small one:

they says the gaz is around a water density =) but it may be hard to live there because oxygen + hygrogen + heat = boom + water hehe =) but anyway as it has a strong magnetic field, there must some metallic or solid thing, but maybe the gaz create it by himself, don't know if its possible that a gaz can create such a strong magnetic field , but at least with simple one like hydrogen and helium seems strange =)

Well see the diagram, they say there is fluid metallic hydrogen in there; not to mention the majority of the hydrogen is theorised to be at a liquid state (of course due to temperatures etc etc. I am guessing with the sheer mass of the thing they believe it safe to say that there is a large amount of this and it is creating a strong magnetic force...Jupiter is 1/10th the size of the sun approximately (as you know already). Too hard to fathom that size lol.. .well anyways with that given, I am still sure there is a solid surface, not consisting of ammonia crystals and gas and particles of water...geez they really annoyed me with this lol...

Well they do theorize a small core, and again considering the size of the planet, this core is not really small at all.

I wonder what it would be like to pass by and see it. looll

plus I was reading something else today about the geysers on europa and rhe effects of it on the planet...but tomorrow for that LOL

They also believe fluid metallic hydrogen is on some of the exoplanets

haha yes but its maybe linked with the equatorial things, like on earth the water and tornads are not in the same direction in both side of the equator, like coriolis forces :

i thought perhaps they're all spinning in the same direction, some faster than others, and some apprearing to go backwards because of the planet's rotation.

like watching soil swirl in a bucket of water, the different soil types separate by mass.

oc what's actually going on all the way over there is something i don't know.
