suddenly vegetarian
A few days ago I suddenly felt the need to give up meat. I have always eaten plenty of meat and had no plans to give it up but now I feel like I can't eat it. I did some reading on going vegetarian or vegan after the feelings started and it made sense to me to try the gradual approach and try cutting out red meat to begin with. I started with that and discovered that I was also disgusted by other meats. Somebody ordered pizza and I didn't know there was chicken on it and it made me feel very sick. I was even turned off by the free range eggs that I was preparing for brunch. I don't know anything about veg/vegan cooking but I just can't eat meat anymore. I have also just given up coffee- something that I thought I loved. I have had coffee every day, at least in the morning, for the past 8 years and now it does not make me feel good. I tried green tea instead but found that even the caffeine in that was not feeling good to me. I don't want to drink alcohol either. I feel like I am making important changes and it's strange that I am changing so suddenly.

Thanks BlueDreamer, I could definitely use some good receipes! Going veg just feels like something I am supposed to do now, it wasn't planned so I have some homework to do I guess. My initial reaction was maybe I am pregnant, but I'm not

Hmm. Strange that the urge was so sudden, indeed. I remember being freaked out by the ribs my parents had bought to eat. I had never been afraid of meat like that before. I'm not afraid of it now, even though I am veggie, but one of the reasons I turned more towards veggie was that I hated how meat felt when I was chewing it. I also stopped liking spiced, salted, or sauces on my food. Lots of people report feeling tired in the first couple of months that they switch, so watch out for that. But in the long run, more report feeling like they have more energy as vegetarians than as omnivores.
If you need any recipe or snack ideas, there's plenty of forums here (use the search tool to the right), plenty of veg/vegans here, and then there's always books and the web.
And I'm curious-- Are you also turned off to milk, cheese, and yogurt?

I've had this urge myself! I haven't stuck to it completely though. Interesting...

I think it's not so strange..
I think it's because you are evolving!
It's the tune of your crystalsound you follow!

I wouldn't say I'm turned off by milk, cheese and yogurt but I don't feel particularily good when I eat it either. I feel like I could do just fine without it. I am very turned off by the treatment of the animals in the factory run dairy farms.
I already feel like I have more energy by cutting out meat, caffeine and alcohol. I have been very run down all month until now and sleeping all day when I am not at work. No matter how much I slept it didn't feel like enough.
I have never liked rare meat- meat that tasted like meat. A few months ago I tried to eat rare venison someone treated me to and I felt very sick. Now cooked meat is just as bad to me. The last time I ate ground beef I was so nauseous I couldn't stand up the next day.

I can respect the fact that you don't want to eat meat. But, why the hell not? There is nothing better than a medium rare steak. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
I don't know about vegetarians, but vegans always look pale and sickly. I didn't work my way to the top of the food chain so I could eat salad.
By the way, I'm just poking fun at you. I really do feel that way, but this isn't a shot at you or anything.

I didn't even know I was robbing a comedian. Which part? The food chain thing?
I'll be damned. Are we hijacking this thread too?

I have enjoyed many steaks in my life too, so I know the feelings of craving one! I just don't crave them anymore.

That's probably because they don't go outside enough. LOL. Or maybe they are Irish.
