Ever seen the movie SiCKO? It made me cry, and then think. Here is the plan already in action...
This letter I sent to Michael Moore the creator of the movie. In it I outline the plan my friends and I have come up with. I would like to hear your input into this idea as your advice may be a crutial ingredient for success for the eventual National Universal Health Care. Quote:
At this point I would like to extend the friendly competition to see if any of you artists out there can create a symbol that can unify the country. Simple yet effective is the key here. A symbol easy enough for the average smoe to draw on a shirt but interesting enough to catch people's attention. Plus as I said any input on our little plan would be greatly appreciated. When I get a response from Mike I will let you all know. peace out devin This ad goes away when you register. |

How will we pay for this?
Remember that many states (at least mine) have deficits. And hey, we are still at war. |

Flat tax is the only way this works. Everyone within the state has to pay an equal percentage of their income to the state health insurance program. I do not know the exact numbers that will be used however and that is one of the things I am going to be researching, is how much other countries pay for the service.
An all inclusive non exemptable flat tax of 5% would bring in MILLIONS of dollars per state. The obvious problems will be that doctors will not be getting paid their untouchable amount of money anymore. Part of the reason doctors make so much money is because they have made personal deals with insurance companies and pharmacudical companies to supplement their income. But there is no reason to fear this transition. I believe that the majority of people in this country are truly good people, just scared. So even if a bunch of greedy doctors leave the state so they can maintain their ridiculous incomes, MANY more doctors will absolutely fly to the chance of providing Universal Health Care. In countries like Canada there are also some supplemental taxes that go along with UHC. Cigarettes and alcohol have very high taxes on them. The rationale is that people who are actively destroying themselves should pay more of the bill. I am a smoker as well and I can totally understand that. The system being more expensive will be a great help to end underage drinking and getting people to quit for lack of being able to afford their chainsmoking habbits. Very good question and Im sorry I dont have exact numbers, I need to do some research to put those together plus figure out what the cost will be to implement this plan in total. So yeah.... peace out devin |

The state deficits you describe will not be a problem once the law is set in place. Can you imagine how many people will flock to those states that have Universal Health Care? That will JUMPSTART the state economy as INSTANTANIOUSLY housing is in high demand. Also more people means a greater need of having more hospitals. Plus more entertainment, more shopping, every industry will benefit, clothing stores, furniture makers, car dealers, EVERYONE. For a while it will be REALLY good for people.
I am trying to figure out a fool proof plan of action to spread UHC once operational in select states. When should I push the plan national? Anyways you made me think of a couple more problems I need solutions to so Ill get back to you |

The main problem is exploitation. There will be some people that will use this system to no good.
Another is that doctors would eventually leave for countries with more capitalist markets. A third issue is that getting rid of insurance would leave many people unemployed. That would drive stocks down. |

I am not so sure that the system even CAN be exploited. I know it sounds too good to be true but the fact is that several of our western neighbors have FREE UIVERSAL Healthcare. It IS a REALITY just not here. If you watch the movie SiCKO you will see how the French system is set up. The doctors get paid MORE for the more people they can get to quit smoking, lower their cholestoral, and improve general health. There are guidelines to follow but they are engineered to promote that the doctors actually FIX problems, not treat their symptoms. Preventative medicine is REALLY big in the countries with UHC and it makes sense, the doctors get paid more the less people have to come for help.
Since the program is run by the state the oportunity for corruption lies with its' leaders. However the system is going to be closely monitored from its conception so I feel that it will be impossible for a leader of the program to be currupted from the get go. So if one Just person holds the office first than it will be his/her responsibility to leave the possition to a proper person. The fact about doctors going to leave is understandable but nowhere but the US do the doctors get paid so much for being corrupted. With money being freed from paying for RIDICULOUS hospital bills the economy WILL BOOM. There is no choice but for that to happen. With health taken care of the elderly will be able to have retirements and people in general will be healthy and happier. As I have said a bunch of times, the influx of people is the easiest way to boost an economy. So the states that have UHC will flourish! Even though Health Insurance stocks will decrease in value, the other stock markets will be improving as sales for all kinds of things like cars and homes will restart our dieing stock exchange. If the Health Insurance companies and pharmacudical companies take a hit than they will no doubt have to either be more fierce towards their remaining customers or they will make it SUPER easy to pay for medical problems all of a sudden, trying to fool people into believing that there is no good reason for universal health care. Either way the aforementioned companies will die, because once a state or two has converted to the system, the other states will be financially hurting from all the people leaving their state. It will become a race to get Universal health care implimented as quickly as possible to gain the same successes as the first states. Since less money is going to insurance and pharmacudicals and doctors as well, there will be more money for the average consumer to spend getting themselves out of debt, or simply getting nicer stuff. Just because you give people free healthcare doesnt mean they suddenly have their priorities straight. Since I didnt address your third issue directly, More money in peoples hands=more work for people to do When people want to spend money, more employees are needed to maufacture and sell the goods. This issues are not loss of jobs, doctors leaving, or exploitation... The issues are illegal retaliation from insurance companies, pharmacudical companies, and US government. The news media will be used to try to convince everyone how horrible UHC is. Hospitals that exist because insurance companies paid for them would be forced to retract from said states, they might destroy the hospital in spite rather than sell it off to the state. The writing of the law will need to be perfect, which requires a noble lawmaker to construct. No doubt the state officials will try to work wormholes into the plan so the plan must be pushed as a chartist would, demanding rights without any leeway for corruption. And enough people will need to stand up and demand it! Plus having the celebrity backing of Mike is rather important. not necessart but absolutely the most beneficial. peace out devin |

I have seen the opposition, and I have written a paper about it before. I am a supporter for universal health care. I think it could work. It needs good people to work on it. Good for you! And I will get myself a t shirt when the time comes

Americans are odd in that they tend to view everything from a capitalist standpoint - even health care. If you can't afford health care, you don't deserve it.
This is a ridiculous standpoint. We can not truly expect to be able to promote "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" if we do not see each individual as worthy of equal treatment and respect. |

Adios greedy doctors, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out! Our total reliance on insurance, to the point it's required by law in some instances, and our reliance on the stock market doesn't really help 99% of the population. It's how the elite scrape all the cream off the top of our hard work. Does not the Constitution say we all have an equal right to life? |

We have an equal right to live. But according to Adam Smith, we don't have an equal right to wealth. And that is what a free market economy is based upon. You reap what you sow.

Our current system is based on good intentions. It certainly looks good on paper but the proof is in the pudding, which is suddenly starting to sour. The incredible wealth of our stock markets is now based on optimism, nothing solid. The middle class is starting to realize they're getting the short end of the stick and they aren't buying the lies anymore. They've realized widening gap between the rich and the poor isn't based on hard work, but corruption that runs all the way up to the highest offices of government. You do realize the market isn't really free? Go look up all the "corporate welfare" programs and tax breaks for the rich. Realize that simply being born into the right family will assure your being rich. Not talent or hard work as those in power would have you believe. That's a carrot on a string dangled in front of your nose. A few are lucky or smart enough to get it, but the majority of the wealth stays in the same families that have had it for hundreds of years. The gap between the rich is the poor is widening to dangerous levels, the rich are getting too greedy and last time that happened the whole house of cards fell over. What the hell is the point of a system that only benefits a tiny fraction on mankind? |

You cant reap what you sow if you have nothing to reap with see thats the big trick. When we were born we were born into slavery nothing was ours we cried some one gave us a bottle we did not know what to call the person but took it. The same is now in the world we take what is given without question as well as we do what we are told without asking questions. You have to get to the root of the Pyschology of it. When postal workers refused to go back to work from striking in the early 1940s or so the government told them to go back or else. Then the or else came they shot some people beat others and forced them back to work. If a large group of people decided to leave america lets say a state worth of people do you think they would be able to go? I bet not why because the world does not spin because of money it spins because of people. Money means nothing unless some one is spending it using it killng for it. Money controls what people do with out federal or others getting their hand dirty. You take the money away and people start crying like children for thier milk. You show them what will happen if they dont support or do what is told that is how it works. You ease them into thing like a stroller. put a toy in the stroller kid crawls in. You put a hot chick on a cell phone all the girls by it to attrack the men all the men buy it to attrack the women. You might get what you want you might get a girl or a guy but the company definately gets what it wants not the money but control. See a person bought the cell phone not because they actually liked the product but because of what it will do for them. The person looses who they are because they are not buying what they like they are following a idea. And that right there is the magic read it twice remember it memorize it. Eventually people wont rememeber who they are all they will be is who television has told them to be. A bunch of hair cuts shirts and whatever as long as they are in. America sets standards of right and wrong and people follow and kill others that dont follow.
Now thats real freedom |

Any dentists or doctors out there? I need to know what laws prevent this from happening, seriously people there are bound to be more problems than just money.
What legal issues will stand in the way? Has anyone tried this sort of thing before? What organizations are pushing for Universal Health Care already? How has protesting been treated in the last 10 years, five years? Anybody know what kind of costs go into canvassing? Are there people hired to stop this kind of movement? If so how do they work? Has anyone's attempts to UHC been covered by the news? If so how was the story treated in the news? There are many problems that could arise, I dont mean to be offensive but most people on these forums think nothing but light and happiness and dont get deep into the problems. I need to know why this could fail before I even start! So I invite the most negative minded people to this board to utterly thrash the idea of UHC. Brint IT!!!! full of negative energy, devin |

I tell you now people have tried. There are people out there shooting it down. Man I wish I had that report I wrote.
Anyhow, yes, there will be opposition, if you get the things you need, the media will have your head. There has to be more people behind it, more people being active about it. Every protest I have heard of has been shut down, usually by some official talking of how it would ruin economy. It seem the republicans really hate the idea, their argument is that everyone wants something for free and you should work for it. Bunch of rich just looking for a way to get on top of others. I will look for my paper, if I haven't thrown it away, its somewhere. |

I hope you will find your paper.
I want to be optimistic. I love my country dearly, and I love capitalism even more. I flirted with communism & anarchism freashman year, thats probably why I hate it so much. I feel so silly for even looking at those hateful doctrines. Maybe the problem isn't wrong in capitalism. Maybe we just need an update. Our theories and methods date back to the 1800s. We need a jolt to startle the market into doing something new. We need a risk taker willing to highlight the wrongs in this system. Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations and contributed heavily to the fall of Mercantilism. We need something to highlight the faults of a mixed market. We clearly can't have our cake and eat it too. |
