The Role of Hope

What is the role of hope in psychology?
Also, hope for what?
Hope that things will get better? Hope that society chooses to rebuild instead of continuing down the path of destruction?
I see good people every day. Good people with cynical attitudes. People who preach that "it is what it is."
I think inner peace is important, but it doesn't stop there. Society is the sum of its individuals and if everyone chooses to do nothing to change, then we collectively stay the same. We cocreate reality every day and there is no reason for hope. Either we change or we don't change. It's a choice people make every day.
