Personal Freedom

#1
I am sitting on a favoured bench in the local park.
I like to sit here for some time during the afternoons
and enjoy the fresh air
the bird song in the trees
the wind
the changes in the weather.
People drifting by
mothers with children
older children
old couples
friends together talking and walking.

I reflect
I recall the freedom
earned by the lives of just 27 of my predecessors
that allows me to sit here now.

Two teens come
they show a knife
demand money and my phone
laughing
they stab me
and run away.

People nearby do not notice
The day becomes night
and time slows and stops
as I bleed alone.

I get up and go to the two teens frozen in their pose.
I take back what is mine.
I look into their vacant eyes
stuck in their emptiness
and swap my pain for theirs.

Their stink is disgusting
They have nothing
are nothing.
I look deeper
I see their families in their pasts.
They are ashamed
hang their heads
to accept judgement.

The night comes close around us
its purpose is alive
we are a trio in nothingness.
I sigh.
I go back
back to the light
back to the day
back to my freedom
life.

When I sit down on the bench again
time returns
and all is well as it was.
I look to the teens
they are nowhere.
I look outside
and see that they were never born.

The birds are singing
the wind is playing its music with the trees
trees that are happy, chatting together.
They excite for good rain soon to come.
Clouds drift across the sky
the afternoon meanders on freely
exactly as before
everything is as it should be
for this moment in this cosmos.

I look into my past
touch my forebears
a million generations
back to their first teeth
I can taste them.
I see the stones of their sacrifice
shine in living light.

I unwrap an orange from its paper
peel it
and eat it
drink water from a small bottle
and enjoy the view of the man passing by
walking his sandy Labrador.
